Cruise ship passengers have been asked to be careful with a commonly packed item. Carnival Cruise Line has warned guests to stop flushing wet wipes down the toilet.

The disposable wipes are a popular item for a quick hygiene fix on a holiday but they can be a nightmare for plumbers.

The popular cruise line has asked tourists to stop flushing wet wipes down the toilet as they are "breaking the system".

John Heald, Carnival Cruise Line's brand ambassador, said: "All our plumbers hate Wet Wipes because despite the signs that plead with (guests) not to flush them down the suction toilet system they still do.

"The world it seems has gone crazy for wet wipes and the wet wipes are breaking our toilet system."

Wet wipes can easily clog a toilet as they are much thicker than toilet paper and can create a wad blockage in the pipes.

Cruise ship toilets generally have a weaker flush than a regular toilet as they use less water than a traditional model.

A clogged toilet is an unpleasant experience for all involved, as the blocked toilet could even end up flooding the cruise ship bathroom.

Heald added: "On behalf of 'Luigi the Plumber' can I ask you not to put these into the toiler and flush.

"If you use them for any reason, drop them in the sanitary bags and let your stateroom attendant know and they will dispose of them."

Sanitary bags are usually provided in the ship's bathrooms and guests can use them to dispose of any wet wipes.
