Wimbledon news: Jannik Sinner walks off court before defeat as Emma Raducanu slated

Express Sport brings you the latest news and updates on day nine of Wimbledon.

It's going to be another jam-packed day at Wimbledon, with the quarter-finals about to begin as the tournament enters its latter stages. Jannik Sinner will face Daniil Medvedev on Centre Court this afternoon, while Carlos Alcaraz will go up against Tommy Paul on Court One.

Novak Djokovic is also through to the last eight despite being left frustrated by the crowd during last night's victory over Holger Rune. The Serb refused to accept the excuse that fans were cheering for his opponent, instead suggesting that he was being booed.

In the women's singles, qualifier Lulu Sun will face Donna Vekic after conquering Emma Raducanu in the previous round. French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini will also be in action today when she takes on Emma Navarro for a place in the last four.

Kyrgios' warning to Wimbledon crowd

Nick Kyrgios has fired a warning to the Wimbledon crowd in the wake of Novak Djokovic's criticism on Centre Court after his round of 16 victory.

Kyrgios said: "I don't think he would have looked back on that match and nit-picked or anything like that. But at the same time I think that Novak looks for more motivation in those things, I have seen it many times, I have tried to do things like that but it just doesn't work.

"He will single (out) that one person to try and find that motivation and on that day it was just that. After that incident happened he started playing some of the best tennis we have seen."

Balding savages Djokovic

Clare Balding landed a cheeky jab at Novak Djokovic today during BBC coverage at Wimbledon.

Balding was speaking alongside Tim Henman and she couldn't help but reference Djokovic's on-court dig at the Centre Court crowd the other night when discussing the upcoming semi-final with Lorenzo Musetti.

Djokovic's name booed

Wimbledon spectators on Court 1 booed Djokovic's name after Musetti set-up a semi-final showdown with the Serb.

During the on-court interview after the Italian's win, Djokovic's name was mentioned to Musetti as he was informed of his semi-final opponent.

And there were noticeable boos from the crowd in the wake of Djokovic's dig on Centre Court the other night.

Musetti through to the semi-finals

Musetti has saled his spot in the Wimbledon semi-finals, where he'll take on Novak Djokovic.

It's the Italian's first Grand Slam semi-final appearance. What a performance that was from him after a very nervy first set.

Musetti in the driving seat right now

Musetti has been brilliant since grabbing the second set. He raced in the third set, winning it 6-2.

The score is currently tied at 2-2 in the fourth.

Musetti bounces back

Musetti has responded, taking the second set on a tie-break - winning it 7-5.

All to play for on Court 1 as Musetti and Fritz fight for a semi-final spot.

Match halted due to medical emergency

Fritz's clash with Musetti was temporarily paused before the second set got underway after a medical emergency in the crowd.

Play had been suspended for roughly four minutes while the spectator received treatment.

The spectator was helped to her feet and walked out of the stand to applause.

Fritz storms through the first set

After a tough opening, Taylor Fritz has raced through the first set, winning it 6-3.

Great statement so far from the American.

And we're underway on Court 1

Lorenzo Musetti's quarter-final against Taylor Fritz is now underway, with the winner taking on Novak Djokovic in the semis following Alex de Minaur's injury withdrawal earlier today.

Elena Rybakina leads Elina Svitolina

Elena Rybakina is on course to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals after making a fast start against Elina Svitolina.

Rybakina won the first set by six games to three and is currently 2-1 up in the second set.

Meanwhile, it's not looking good for Jelena Ostapenko, who is trailing Barbora Krejcikova on Court One.

Taylor Fritz called out for 'inappropriate' gesture

Pat Cash described Taylor Fritz's conversation at the net with his opponent as 'inappropriate' before the American took on Lorenzo Musetti in his Wimbledon quarter-final.

Fritz told Arthur Rinderknech to 'have a nice flight home' after beating him in straight sets in the second round.

Reflecting on that incident, Cash said: "That's not cool, that's not good, it's inappropriate and he doesn't have a lot of mates on this tour, does he?

"But he doesn't really care, he wants to get out there and do his stuff. He's not overly friendly but he doesn't care.

"You're not going to get any more mates from saying 'have a flight home', though!"

Alex de Minaur withdraws from Novak Djokovic clash

Alex de Minaur has pulled out of his quarter-final meeting with Novak Djokovic due to a back injury.

The Aussie was in visible discomfort during the latter stages of his victory over Arthur Fils on Monday.

It means Djokovic is automatically through to the semi-finals, where he will face Lorenzo Musetti or Taylor Fritz.

Wimbledon chiefs may make 'last resort' change

Wimbledon could be forced to move all matches indoors if the unpredictable British weather fails to improve over the coming days.

That's according to All England Club chief executive Sally Bolton, who said: "We now have an extra day, we've got the two roofs.

"In terms of resilience to get through the Championships, we're confident we can still do that despite the continuing variability of the weather.

"We've got a range of contingencies. Going indoors is one of those options but that really would be a bit of a last resort."

Novak Djokovic 'annoyed' with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

BBC commentator John Lloyd believes Novak Djokovic is frustrated that he is not as popular with tennis fans as the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

"I think deep down he gets a bit annoyed at some of his rivals, in particular Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and they were so popular on court," said Lloyd.

"Novak, sometimes, is just not as popular as those two. Well who would be?

"And I think sometimes he gets a little bit annoyed at it, the crowd gets on him. He thinks it’s a bit personal [but] it isn’t."

Roy Keane delivers brutal Andy Murray verdict

Roy Keane believes it would not be 'sad news' if Andy Murray decides to retire from tennis after bidding farewell to Wimbledon last week.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast by Sky Bet, Keane said: "Andy Murray retiring from tennis isn’t sad news at all. He’s 37 years old, had a brilliant career but had plenty of injuries.

"He should count his blessings that he’s had such a successful career. He must have been crying, although it’s okay to cry.

"That’s not sad news. It’s good news. He’s got a lovely family. Good luck to him. He had a brilliant career.

"They talk about him playing in a great era. We were up against the great Barcelona. He could have been with Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe."

Piers Morgan brands Novak Djokovic 'monumental d***'

Piers Morgan has taken to X, formerly Twitter, to declare that he is a huge fan of Novak Djokovic's hot-headedness at Wimbledon this year.

He went on to offer the Serb an interview on his TalkTV programme, insisting that he deserves 'way more respect' than he is getting at the moment.

It comes after Djokovic stormed out of a BBC interview after being left frustrated at the line of questioning.

Carlos Alcaraz admits he 'didn't feel comfortable'

Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that he struggled to get to grips with the playing surface on Court One during his quarter-final triumph over Tommy Paul.

"I felt the difference playing on Centre Court and on Court One, the grass is different," said the Spaniard.

"Obviously I feel like it was more sand on Court One than Centre Court. I don’t want to say holes.

"There were more matches on Court One than Centre Court, I had to adapt my game on that.

"I didn’t feel comfortable at all playing on Court One with the conditions on it. As I said, I had to adapt my game on it. I tried to play my best tennis on it.

"Yeah, I think at the end I found it, I found my best tennis and my good tennis just to feel comfortable on it."

John McEnroe defends Novak Djokovic

John McEnroe has urged the Wimbledon crowd to show more respect to Novak Djokovic ahead of his quarter-final meeting with Alex de Minaur.

"You have to respect the greatness that you see," McEnroe told the BBC while discussing Djokovic's angry reaction to the vocal fans on Centre Court after his win over Holger Rune.

"It’s easy to be the backseat driver and let it go, but this is what he’s been dealing with for 10, 15, 20 years that people have been doing this.

"I admire the guts that he had to say it there. That takes something. That’s in a way gonna put more people against him.

"He doesn’t deserve that at this stage. We need him and he’s been too great for our game in my opinion."

Jannik Sinner opens up on illness

Jannik Sinner has revealed that he did not want to leave the court for a medical timeout during his defeat to Daniil Medvedev.

The Italian looked unwell and left the court during the third set, which he lost in a tiebreaker.

"This morning I already didn't feel great, I had some problems and then with the fatigue it was tough," said Sinner.

"Nothing to take away from Daniil. I think he played very smart, good tennis. That's it.

"I went off the court. I actually didn't want to go off. The physio told me it was better to take some time because he watched me and I didn't seem in shape to play.

"I was struggling physically. It wasn't an easy moment. I tried to fight with what I had today. That's it."

Carlos Alcaraz believes in himself

Carlos Alcaraz has stressed that he is confident he can consistently fight back from adversity after coming from behind to beat Tommy Paul in four sets this evening.

"I believe that I can be back. If I'm struggling a little bit to find the solutions or if the opponent is playing a great tennis, I don't get in trouble," Alcaraz told the BBC.

"I believe, at the end, I'll be able to come back and find solutions and the good rhythm as in today's match for example.

"Here at the Grand Slams, the matches are longer, and I have more time to recover and be back, so I believe in myself all the time."

Jasmine Paolini is through!

Jasmine Paolini has emphatically booked her spot in the Wimbledon semi-finals with a 6-2 6-1 win against Emma Navarro on Centre Court.

She becomes the first player to reach the women's singles semi-finals at SW19 since 1926.

Carlos Alcaraz looks ahead to Daniil Medvedev

Carlos Alcaraz has previewed his Wimbledon semi-final against Daniil Medvedev...

He told BBC: "Well, I mean, he's a really great player. Same semi-final as last year, hopefully I'm going to get the same result!

"He just beat Jannik Sinner, the best player right now. I know that he's in really good shape.

"I have to play my best, believe in myself and try to keep going if I want to beat him. It's going to be a difficult one but I'm going to enjoy."

Carlos Alcaraz is through!

He beat Medvedev in straight sets on his way to winning Wimbledon last year...

Carlos Alcaraz turns it around

Carlos Alcaraz has won two sets on the bounce to take the lead against Tommy Paul on No. 1 Court.

After taking the second 6-4, the Spaniard finds his groove and takes the third 6-2 to leave Paul with a daunting task.

Daniil Medvedev keeping an eye on rivals

Daniil Medvedev admitted he was keeping an eye on the score in Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon quarter-final against Tommy Paul during his match with Jannik Sinner.

He said: "It's my first time winning two matches on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Usually I either win one or zero so this is a record already!

"I saw already the first set [of Alcaraz vs Paul]. It was raining so they only showed this match on the scoreboard and at one moment I saw 4-4 and 50 minutes of play and thought, 'What are they doing there?!'

"I'm going to watch a little bit now when I come back and then get ready for the winner. They play good matches so you guys should watch also!"

Daniil Medvedev delighted with victory

Daniil Medvedev was delighted after beating Jannik Sinner in five sets, especially with maintaining his level following the lengthy break midway through the match.

"I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it needs to be a tough match. He's not anymore a guy you can beat easy," Medvedev told BBC.

"Even I felt at one moment he was not feeling that good, but I knew this could get away then he started playing better. I'm happy that I managed to still stay at a high level.

"I think it was great points, great match. I'm really happy to win and really happy with my game and looking forward."

Jannik Sinner is OUT!

Daniil Medvedev has beaten Jannick Sinner in five sets, dumping the world No. 1 out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Medvedev takes it 6-7 6-4 7-6 2-6 6-3 to end his five-match losing streak against the top seed and book a semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul.

Sinner clearly wasn't at 100 per cent for this one, but he'll no doubt come back stronger.

Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev goes the distance

We're heading into a decider on Centre Court...

Jannik Sinner cruises to a 6-2 win in the fourth set and has the momentum heading into the fifth.

Tommy Paul takes first set vs Carlos Alcaraz

Queen's champion Tommy Paul has taken the first set against Carlos Alcaraz in their Wimbledon quarter-final!

The American breaks Alcaraz's serve with a passing backhand as the No. 1 Court roars.

Alcaraz, the reigning champion, has a fight on his hands here.

Latest cancellations and court changes

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula's glamorous doubles match against Elise Mertens and Su-Wei Hsieh on Court 14 is among the latest to be cancelled on a rain-stricken day at Wimbledon.

Among the court moves, one extra match has been added to Centre Court, and two have been switched to No. 1 court,

After Jasmine Paolini vs Emma Navarro on Centre, Barbora Krejcikova and Laura Siegemund will face Hao-Ching Chan and Veronika Kudermetova in the doubles.

After No. 1 Court hosts Carlos Alcaraz vs Tommy Paul, there will be two doubles matches, starting with Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow vs Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puertz.

Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse will then meet Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe.

Daniil Medvedev leads Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner doesn't look 100 per cent, and he's in trouble now. Daniil Medvedev leads 2-1 after taking the third set in a tiebreak.

The Russian saved two set points to force a tiebreak, which he won 7-4.

Jannik Sinner leaves court mid-match

Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev are currently locked at one set all. Sinner took the opener 7-6 before Medvedev levelled by winning the second 6-4.

But Sinner caused concern on Centre Court during his Wimbledon quarter-final against Medvedev.

The Italian world No. 1 gingerly walked off the court with the medics with what looked like an illness rather than an injury.

He was away for over 12 minutes before re-emerging. It isn't clear what his issue was but he had lost some intensity in the second set.

Donna Vekic beats Lulu Sun!

Donna Vekic is through to her first major semi-final!

The Croat fights back from a set down to beat Lulu Sun 5-7 6-4 6-1 on Court No. 1.

Wimbledon chiefs forced to cancel matches

Wimbledon organisers have been forced to cancel some matches due to the unpredictable weather at SW19.

Many of the junior events are running way behind as a result of the weather, which has caused havoc throughout the tournament.

Novak Djokovic storms out of BBC interview

Novak Djokovic stormed out of an interview with the BBC after growing frustrated at the line of questioning.

The Serb was unhappy at repeatedly being asked to explain his fiery reaction to the Centre Court crowd following his victory over Holger Rune.

After a third question about the matter, Djokovic snapped: "Do you have any questions other than the crowd?

"I mean, are you focused only on that or any questions about the match, or something like that? Or is it solely focused on that?

"This is the third question already. I said what I have to say, maybe we can speak about something else."

The reporter went on to ask Djokovic about his upcoming clash with Alex de Minaur but did not get an answer, with the 37-year-old storming out.

No play on outside courts for now

The earliest possible start time on the outside courts has been pushed back to 1.30pm with rain still falling at Wimbledon.

The famously unpredictable British weather has caused plenty of delays at SW19 this year.

It seems there is no sign of the rain easing up as of yet, meaning there could be further delays over the course of the afternoon.

Alex de Minaur provides fitness update

Alex de Minaur is determined to 'find a way' to play against Novak Djokovic despite suffering a freak injury during his win over Arthur Fils.

The Aussie was moving very gingerly during the final set after hurting his back but expressed hope that he will recover in time to face Djokovic.

Speaking to the Wimbledon crowd, he said: "I’ll be all right. I’ll find a way.

"No, thank you guys. Atmosphere was unbelievable, super proud of myself to be in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, playing in front of you guys, so thank you."

Emma Raducanu criticised over Andy Murray snub

Dan Evans has scolded Emma Raducanu for failing to fulfil her commitment to play mixed doubles with Andy Murray at Wimbledon.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Evans wrote: "It’s just unfortunate how it played out, with Emma pulling out a few hours before their match because she had a sore wrist.

"Of course the singles is a player’s priority. The prize money on offer is substantially more and that will always be Emma’s main focus.

"But once you agree to play doubles with someone, especially in a special situation like this, then you should be fully committed to it.

"I recently played doubles with Andy at Roland-Garros and he waited around all week to play with me, having been knocked out in the singles.

"I can’t blame Emma for pulling out but there’s a lesson in there about not committing unless you’re 100 per cent on board."

Novak Djokovic doubles down on fan criticism

Novak Djokovic has doubled down on his criticism of the Wimbledon crowd after accusing fans of disrespecting him during his win over Holger Rune.

In his post-match press conference, he said: "All the true tennis fans that respect players, of course, you're going to support one player or the other."It's obviously solely up to them. It's fully understandable that they have the freedom to choose who they back in the match.

"But if somebody steps over the line, I react. That's basically what it was. After the match, I said what I said."

Sue Barker hints at BBC return

Sue Barker has admitted that she would be open to returning to the BBC to host their Wimbledon coverage.

The veteran broadcaster stepped down in 2022 after three decades as the face of Wimbledon but has opened the door to a potential comeback.

"Yes, I would," she said. "I loved it. I loved the people and I didn't want to leave.

"But you start hearing rumours of what is happening and [the BBC] obviously wants the next generation.

"When you start hearing those rumours you think: 'Maybe it's time to get out while they still want me rather than being shoved out of the back door'."

Novak Djokovic snaps at reporter in press conference

Novak Djokovic snapped back at a reporter in a rather tetchy press conference after being left frustrated by the line of questioning.

The boo-like noise made throughout the match by fans supporting Holger Rune irritated Djokovic, who grew tired of being asked about it in the media centre.

He fumed at one reporter: "Are you going to keep asking me about the crowd? That’s the third time you’ve asked about that.

"So you’re not going to talk to me about tennis, about the match, about my opponent?"

Djokovic's team and the ATP official tried to cut the exchange, with the Serb later adding: "If someone goes over the line, I react. That was it. After the match I said what I said."
