Madison Keys' coach and fiance Bjorn Fratangelo was caught picking his nose and flicking the findings away live on TV as he watched the American in her Wimbledon match with Jasmine Paolini.

Keys was forced to retire while serving for the match after picking up an unfortunate injury in the closing stages of her fourth-round clash with the world No. 7.

She left the court in tears on a hugely disappointing day, that will only have gotten worse for Keys and Fratangelo when they are informed that he was spotted by ESPN cameras while compromised.

In the second set, Keys was looking to break Paolini and led 30-0 when the camera panned to her support team and Fratangelo, who cheered her on but then began searching the contents of his nostril.

The coverage stayed with the former top 100 player longer than he would have wished, as he started to pick his nose and the commentators pleaded for a different shot elsewhere.

“She's had a lot of coaches over the years but something clicked with the two of them," Rennae Stubbs said on the airwaves. "Not to mention, they’re doing a house renovation and planning a wedding. So that is a solid couple.”

Then when Fratangelo began picking his nose she added: “I think when the information comes in from him to her, he is… I’m glad he didn’t do what we thought… get the camera off him while he’s picking his nose! I think when the information comes from him, she doesn’t take it personally.”

Fratangelo became Keys' coach last year again after a second-round defeat at the French Open, having previously ended their professional ties and she competed in Europe alone.

“It didn't go so well. She had some tough losses and she came home and asked for my help. And the first thing I said was like, ‘Are you sure?’” Fratangelo told the ATP Tour. “Because we've done a great job of kind of staying out of each other's careers over the seven years we've been together. And she said yes.

“It was nice in a way and it was also a little bit sad, because since then things have kind of gone downhill with the injury and stuff, it's in my foot. So I really haven't hit much since. I played [an ATP Challenger Tour event in] Cary afterwards and I haven't really hit much since then. It's actually both feet. I have some genetic problems with some bones in my big toes. And I've actually fractured both of my sesamoid bones in both toes.

“It was a blessing to kind of have some other things to focus on. I did some coaching stuff for the USTA while I was out last fall with the juniors and stuff and I really enjoyed it. And that was kind of the first time that I thought like, ‘Wow, this coaching stuff is actually a little bit more fun than I thought it would be."
