Nick Kyrgios was told that Novak Djokovic could guarantee he would “win Wimbledon” if he abided by the Serb’s strict training plan, but the seven-time SW19 champion was turned down this year.

Kyrgios is not competing at the 2024 Championship as he continues his rehabilitation from an injury that ensured he has been able to play just one professional match since October 2022.

Instead, that year’s Wimbledon finalist has been a pundit and commentator for the BBC at the summer Slam. Kyrgios was due to practice with Djokovic on Wednesday, before the Serb defeated British wildcard Jacob Fearnley 6-3 6-4 5-7 7-5.

Their hit was rained off, though they may still reunite on the court at some point during the tournament, and Djokovic believes that he can make Kyrgios a champion after defeating him in the 2022 final.

“The offer still stands!” Djokovic said at the Australian Open earlier this year when he appeared on an episode of Good Trouble With Nick Kyrgios. “You get on my six-month routine, daily program, and you win Wimbledon... easy.”

However, Kyrgios shook his head and said: “No chance, I am not living like that, no way.”

Secret surgery on his wrist ensured that it would have been unlikely for Kyrgios to have been able to take Djokovic up on his offer this year, even though he expressed his disdain at the idea.

But Kyrgios has been on a strict training regiment himself. He explained to The Canberra Times that he has been putting in endless physical work in a small underground gym in Deakin in a bid to return to professional tennis.

"I've probably learned to love this a bit which is scary," Kyrgios admitted. "I'm still building up... it can be tough, but it's an absolute necessity.

"I definitely struggled with this my whole career. I wasn't big on doing conditioning or anything that got me out of my comfort zone, but you've got to build that resilience in your body, and in here, it's just mental. I'm here with a good group of guys and we all push each other."

Alongside his trusted trainers including physiotherapist Will Maher, who has accompanied Kyrgios at Wimbledon to continue their progress, the Aussie is back on court and hitting balls again.

And although he won’t be taking up Djokovic’s offer, barring a major change of heart, Kyrgios is working his way back up to fitness and likely will have his eye on a return to the Wimbledon courts in 2025.
