Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou heads into the new season knowing he needs major attacking reinforcements. The north Londoners slipped away in the battle for a Champions League place last season, in part because they were too often blunt up front.

Captain Son Heung-min shouldered most of the scoring burden after Harry Kane’s departure. The South Korean scored 17 times and assisted a further 10 goals, taking responsibility for creating and scoring chances.

Richarlison struck 12 goals although eight of those came in an eight-match spell during the winter. Postecoglou will want surgery conducted on his forward line, and that may involve building a new attack around Son as a central figure.

Spain’s Euro 2024 star Nico Williams has been linked with Spurs. Although several other huge European clubs are also interested in a move, the Premier League club can get ahead of the competition by matching the 21-year-old’s reported £49million release clause at Athletic Bilbao.

On the other wing, the versatile Jonathan David would also be an excellent addition. David struck 26 goals for Lille last season and would be able to play in a fluid front three alongside Son and Williams.

During a packed campaign in which Spurs will hope to go far in the Europa League, Dejan Kulusevski, Brennan Johnson and Richarlison provide three excellent back-up options for Postecoglou’s attack.

The Australian head coach may also hope to finally land Conor Gallagher over the coming weeks. Spurs have long been linked with the Chelsea vice-captain, whose departure from Stamford Bridge would help ease their financial constraints. The west Londoners are believed to want around £50m for the England international.

Spurs will want to negotiate down that price, especially if they are to spend nearly £80m on Williams and David, the latter of whom Lille reportedly value at £30m.

Postecoglou has already spent £30m on Leeds’ teenage sensation Archie Gray. The England U21 international can expect regular game time under the Spurs boss, who is keen to use young and dynamic players in midfield.

Lucas Bergvall will also join Spurs this summer after a pre-agreement deal with Djurgardens was completed in January.

Spurs will naturally need to sell players to ensure they can fund a big-spending summer. Postecoglou said towards the end of last season that some squad members would not remain at the club for much longer. Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal and Giovani Lo Celso have all been linked with departures.

Tottenham’s dream line-up for 2024-25: Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Gallagher, Sarr, Gray, David, Son, Williams.
