Max Verstappen fought off Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to win the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix but was immediately teased about the Netherlands' defeat to Austria at Euro 2024 by interviewer Alex Wurz.

Verstappen survived what he described as a "spicy" battle during the opening stages of the race to win with an eventual margin of four seconds to Piastri in second place.

After stepping out of the cockpit, Verstappen was interviewed by Wurz, who is an Austrian native. "Max Verstappen, winner," he started.

"Let's not talk about football. Sorry to beat you... Austria won against Holland... unless you really want to talk about it! But well done for such a strong comeback."

This comment provoked a chuckle from Verstappen, who took the quip well. The Dutch national watched on as their close rivals came out on the right side of a five-goal thriller during the Euro 2024 group stages.

Wurz's witty remark wasn't the only football-related slack that Verstappen has received this weekend. He revealed on Thursday that close friend and Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko had also been in contact.

"I had of course said that the Dutch team would win," he explained. "He said ‘It turns out that you are not a football expert, so you concentrate on Formula One.’”

Fortunately for Verstappen, he didn't slip up when the pressure was on in the sprint race. "It was a good first lap but once the DRS opens, it was very hard to get out of it," he noted. "A few exciting battles as well but once we cleared the DRS, I could do my own race and it was better.

"You could see they had two cars pushing flat-out trying to make it difficult for me. A few things to think about we can do better for tomorrow because it's a longer race and harder for the tyres. It will be interesting to see how that evolves."
