Fans of the beloved Christmas classic Home Alone have made an unusual revelation after the iconic house hit the market with a hefty price tag of $5.25million (£4.2million).

The residence is one of the most recognisable in film history as the place where young Kevin McCallister (portrayed by Macaulay Culkin) laid booby traps in the fight against would-be burglars in the smash hit and its sequel, 'Lost in New York'. The franchise appears to show the property laden with secret passageways and dark corners where the villains could be ambushed.

However, the house looks very different on its new listing and even boasts slick, contemporary interior design. One baffled fan commented: "What the hell did they do to it?". However, more critical-minded cinephiles remarked Kevin's ingenious traps and stunts were filmed on a separate set, while the house was only filmed from the exterior.

"It was a set," pointed out one fan. "The entire interior of the house was a set."

However, this revelation didn't sit well with everyone. One person expressed disappointment: "They really took all the character out of it. Can't even tell it's the same house without a side by side."

Another vented their frustration: "Gotta spend another million just to make it look like it once did."

A third commented: "Whoever buys it better repaint all that s**t again."

The five-bed, six-bathroom mansion in Winnetka, Illinois, is up for sale for the first time since 2012, after it had a brief stint as an Airbnb in 2021. American estate agents The Dawn McKenna Group called the property "one of the most famous houses in the world."

"Nestled on a picturesque, tree-lined street in the heart of east Winnetka and elegantly poised behind a wrought-iron gate, the property epitomises classic Chicago suburban architecture," the listing read.

"The residence itself is a masterpiece of traditional style with an effortlessly flowing floor plan brimming with warmth, character, and exquisitely crafted detail. Fully renovated and expanded in 2018, the current owners took the utmost care in maintaining the architectural detail and integrity of the home's most memorable and recognisable spaces."

The property was last sold for $1.65 million in 2012. The house was built in 1929 and was designed by architect David Adler and is one of the most recognisable houses in the world.

The family who purchased it most recently have lived in the house for the past 10 years and have made significant renovations to the property.
