A pilot has revealed that while flying is their dream job it can at times be demoralising to get paid so little after spending so much money on training.

Speaking anonymously about their role, the pilot provided an insight into what life is like as a pilot in the UK and how it compares to people’s impressions of pilots from the outside.

The pilot said their training cost them around £100,000 and took them over five years to complete. Following their training, they now work for a regional airline earning just over £30,000. They told the Telegraph that their salary was quite low considering how much pilots train and how skilled they are.

They added: "The yearly salary doesn’t cover a third of the cost of the training. The bigger airlines offer more money: British Airways pays pilots a salary of around £90,000, Ryanair is about £70,000 and even EasyJet offers £65,000. It’s quite demoralising knowing that you’ve spent so much money and worked so hard to get paid so poorly."

Despite the lack of pay, the pilot said they had more good days than bad days and there were some perks to the job. They said: “I like the lifestyle. I live a six-minute drive away from the airport and I can turn up 20 minutes before departure.

“You are also away a lot if you work for one of the big airlines. I’m home every night. Even with my late shift, I’m home for dinner at 9pm.

“So I’m happy at the moment. I work two flights a day, five days a week. If I have a morning shift, I’ll start at six o’clock and I’ll be home by 11.30am. That’s quite a nice little lifestyle.”

Furthermore, they added that the best part of the job was flying the aircraft, a dream they had had since they were three years old and something their family had been “very supportive” of.

This pilot isn’t the only member of the flight crew to provide an insight into the inner workings of an aircraft.

Flight attendant and TikTok user MrsMiva has revealed why members of the cabin crew greet passengers when they board a flight. According to MrsMiva, it's all part of keeping the aircraft and passengers safe.

She wrote: “Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly?”

The video which contained the revelation has gone viral on TikTok receiving around a million likes as people shared their amazement at the revelation.
