A remoaner has been mocked and told to "change the record" after revealing his ambition to put the UK "back into the heart of Europe" eight years after Brexit.

Scottish Liberal Democrats leader Alex Cole-Hamilton was warned of the danger of his pro-EU stance, given former UK party leader Jo Swinson was quickly toppled after pledging to scrap Brexit in the 2019 General Election.

Speaking at the weekend, Mr Cole-Hamilton accused the Tories of “destroying the UK’s relationship with Europe, adding that he cared ”passionately about getting Britain back into the heart of Europe”.

However, fellow Scotsman Brian Monteith, an ex-Tory Member of the Scottish Parliament and former Brexit Party MEP under Nigel Farage, was unimpressed.

He told Express.co.uk: “Mr Cole-Hamilton should change the record. Fighting old battles like the EU referendum all over again didn’t help Jo Swinson and it ain’t going to help the Lib Dems now.”

"Liberal Democrats like him have to create a world that does not exist to persuade us that EU membership is desirable.

“No doubt he would abandon the pound and adopt the euro as our currency, open our borders to even more people – including migrants accepted into the EU, who would no longer need people traffickers to smuggle them over."

Directly addressing Mr Cole-Hamilton’s core point, Mr Monteith continued: “The UK has never been at the heart of Europe. Look at the map, Alex: we are on the periphery and our interest are global, across the oceans, not regional.

"Yet when called upon, the UK has shown leadership in providing support for poor Ukraine while the EU prevaricated and we guard the borders of the Baltic states – all without the need for EU institutions that would rather cut deals with Putin."

He concluded: "There was no hard Brexit, we negotiated a trade deal that is the best the EU has given any country and trade between the UK and the EU is up, yet we have also been free to join the pacific nations where the real economic growth of the future is.

“That's a win, win for the Scottish and British people."

Interviewed on BBC One Scotland’s The Sunday Show, Mr Cole-Hamilton told host Martin Geissler the Liberal Democrats are "proud Europeans" who would attempt to rebuild the country's relationship with the EU and encourage free movement.

He said: “The Conservatives have absolutely destroyed our relationship with Europe, there is no trust there right now at all."
