Gardeners across the UK are being encouraged to use a simple and affordable solution to keep their roses flourishing throughout the summer season.

Known primarily for its therapeutic use in baths, this affordable household item, costing as little as £3, has been hailed by horticultural experts for its remarkable benefits in promoting healthy, vibrant blooms.

Epsom salt, chemically known as magnesium sulphate, is renowned for its rich magnesium content, a crucial nutrient for plants.  Magnesium plays a vital role in photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy.

By incorporating Epsom salt into their gardening routine, rose enthusiasts can ensure their plants receive the necessary nutrients to thrive.

Horticulturists suggest several methods for applying Epsom salt to roses.

One method is soil application: dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt in a gallon of water and use the solution to water the roses at the base.

This should be done once a month during the growing season.

Another method is foliar spray: mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt with a gallon of water and spray the solution directly onto the rose leaves. This method allows for quick absorption of nutrients and can be done every two weeks.

For gardeners preparing new rose beds, adding a tablespoon of Epsom salt to the planting hole before setting the rose bush can give it a nutrient-rich start.

The advantages of using Epsom salt extend beyond just beautiful blooms.

Regular application can enhance the overall health of rose plants, leading to increased flower production, improved leaf colour, and enhanced nutrient absorption.

A steady supply of magnesium helps maintain deep green foliage, a sign of healthy plants.

Epsom salt can be purchased in most health food shops, including Holland and Barrett for £3.
