'Massive' wine that's perfect for steak instead of Malbec

Wine expert Luke Flunder took to social media to share his latest wine recommendation, but this time he's ditched the light summer wines for an elegant bottle of red

Summer days often lead to lazy evenings enjoying a glass of something chilled on the patio. Or at least, that's how our evenings could be if it wasn't for the weather of the Great British summer.

As the UK languishes under cloudy skies heavy with rain, barbecue weather feels like a million miles away. But whatever is on the menu, wine expert Luke Flunder can find you the perfect bottle to suit every flavour in any weather.

In a video on TikTok, the wine connoisseur with over 200,00 followers, continues his mission to help wine lovers everywhere "drink less wine, but drink better wine."

In his weekly recommendation post, he said: "It's Friday night and you know what that means - time to open up a great bottle of wine."

Standing in the drizzling rain in a quiet corner of his garden, Luke said: "Normally at this time of year I'd be opening up a light, elegant, chilled pinot noir."

But we are guessing this rather autumnal spell of weather has probably turned his thoughts, along with ours, to something a little more substantial.

Admitting in the comment section that he is standing in the rain because his "kids were going bonkers in the house" he says that he has "brought in the big guns and there's not much bigger than the Tannat grape from Uruguay - it's a step up level from Bodega Garzon."

Sipping the robust red, he said: "Well, if it was public transport, it would be a double-decker bus. It's massive. But unlike Madiran, its birthplace, where you can get really dark tannic wines, this has a little bit more elegance to it."

Braving the persistent drizzle, Luke asserts that the Garzon is "a great thing, especially with steak instead of Malbec or Zinfandel."

In a departure from his usual approach, Luke refrains from revealing where he snapped up the bottle or the dent it would make in your wallet. However, a quick online search reveals that Garzon Bodega Tannat seems to start at approximately £18.99 from vino purveyors like Laithwaites.

It might carry a steeper price than some of his other picks, but as they say, there's no such thing as a free ride.

With his background as a former manager at Majestic Wine, Luke regularly enlightens his social media audience with his liquid treasures, always aiming to suggest wines that offer value for money. Spanning from bargain Aldi reds that punch above their weight to an enticing £7 supermarket white that garners high praise, Luke joins the ranks of digital sommeliers guiding us to quaff finer wines without splashing out.
