Junto Nakatani scored another KO victory to retain his WBC world title against Vincent Astrolabio in Tokyo on Saturday. The first-round TKO victory was Nakatani's eighth stoppage win in his last 10 fights.
Nakatani (28-0, 21 KOs), of Kanagawa, Japan, sent Astrolabio to the canvas with a left-hand body punch to end the fight at 2 minutes and 37 seconds of the opening round. Nakatani, a former flyweight and junior bantamweight champion, was fighting for the second time this year.
After the fight, Nakatani said he'd like to unify titles with WBA bantamweight champion and ESPN's No. 2 ranked Takuma Inoue, the younger brother of undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue. Nakatani solidifies his spot atop the bantamweight division with the victory over Astrolabio.
On the same card, Anthony Olascuaga scored an upset third-round KO win over Riku Kano to win the vacant WBO flyweight title.
Olascuaga (7-1, 5 KOs), of Los Angeles, has fought the last three times in Japan. He suffered the only loss of his career in a ninth-round TKO, challenging Kenshiro Teraji for the WBC and WBA junior featherweight titles in April 2023.
With the victory, Olascuaga makes a big splash in the 118-pound division, entering at No. 4.
In another upset on Saturday, Brad Pauls defeated Nathan Heaney by 12th-round TKO in a middleweight bout in Birmingham, England.
Pauls (19-1-1, 11 KOs), of Cornwall, England, makes his debut in the middleweight rankings at No. 10.
ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
