A police officer in Manchester, N.H. shot and killed a man on Friday after being fired upon, Attorney General John M. Formella‘s office said.

The officer returned fire after the man fired a shot with a pistol, prosecutors said. The officer was not injured.

Around 9:30 a.m., the man approached the officer near the intersection of Bridge and Ash streets and said he wanted to speak with police, prosecutors said.

The man claimed he “was armed with a gun, and the officer instructed him to keep his hands visible,” prosecutors said. But the man reached into his pocket for the gun, and “a struggle ensued, during which the male fired what was later determined to be a pistol and the officer returned fire,” prosecutors said.

The man was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he later died, Formella’s office said.

Formella’s office will investigate the officer’s use of deadly force. The officer was wearing a body-worn camera that captured the encounter.

“That footage is currently being preserved and will be reviewed,” prosecutors said.

The officer’s name will not be released until he or she is formally interviewed by investigators, which is expected to be take place within the next five to 10 days, prosecutors said.
