It’s always tea time at Yucoo

Fancheng Yu, 22, who goes by Michael, and his college friend Penghui Lao, 24, who says, “Call me Jerry,” opened Yucoo, a shop in Brighton selling tea drinks. With unadorned gray walls, a tile floor, and some seating, the store is unshowy. However, what the two offer is worth paying attention to. Yucoo sells bubble teas, but the shop also offers high-quality teas sourced directly from Yu’s family farms near Hangzhou in eastern China, a region known for its long history of cultivating tea with traditional practices. “Only the youngest, tenderest leaves from a whole branch of the tree are handpicked,” Yu says, noting that a single tree can often yield only one-and-a-half ounces of tea. At the shop, you can sip hot Wuyi Mountain Rock tea, an aromatic oolong grown in rocky terrain that has a complex, full-bodied roasted flavor reminiscent of black tea, and Wild Mountain tea, a black tea, harvested from ancient trees in the West Lake area and known for its light, woodsy taste. The menu has a list of unique cold drinks, all with fresh ingredients. A series of milk teas is crafted with the bold Wuyi Mountain Rock tea. Cinnamon bark creates a cinnamon milk tea; the matcha milk tea has genuine matcha from Yu’s family estate in Japan. Fruit drinks are blends of the slightly sweet and mildly bitter Dragon Well Green tea, a celebrated green tea, and fresh dragon fruit, peaches, or mangoes. Here’s a chance to try the healthy Yakult tea, a milky smooth probiotic drink akin to yogurt, mixed with fresh fruits — peach, mango, strawberry, or pineapple — and the Dragon Green tea. You might need some advice when ordering. For those who don’t want tea, Yu or Lao will blend up thick smoothies made with strawberries, taro root, or coconut. (Drinks range from $5.99 to $7.99). 577 Washington St., Brighton, yuccobubbletea.com.
