Wikipedia:WikiProject Ports

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WikiProject Ports is a WikiProject dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to shipping ports and harbors worldwide.

Scope

[edit]
Port of Bruges-Zeebrugge

The principal focus of the Project is on:

  • major seaports, docks and shipping terminals;
  • port operators and authorities; and
  • related articles on port equipment, logistics and economics.

However the project scope extends to any port or harbor which caters for international, national or regional shipping, including the major fishing ports. Former and historical ports also fall within the Project bounds.

Departments

[edit]

Assessment

[edit]

The WikiProject Ports assessment department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Ports-related articles.

Assessments are based on parameters in the {{WP Ports}} project banner which is posted on an article's talk page. The "class" assessment helps recognise outstanding articles and guide editors to articles in need of more work. The "importance" assessment helps identify an informal priority list for article work.

In addition to the table format listed on this page, articles can be searched for by class and importance in this automatically generated worklist.

Outreach

[edit]

The outreach department acts as the project's central point of coordination for recruiting new members and maintaining the interest of current participants.

Requested images

[edit]
Port of Mogadishu, Somalia

Many Ports articles lack free-use photos, images or maps outlining port operations or history. A number of unused photos of ports are available at the Commons, and requests for new or additional images can also be amde at this WikiProject's talk page. All image contribution are welcome, especially historical images and those of minor ports.

Ongoing Maintenance

[edit]
  • Keep Category:Ports and harbours up to date with new ports and port-related articles.
  • Create new ports articles to fill the gaps. Where a port is outlined within a wider article on a port city, consider whether sufficient material exists for a standalone article.
  • Update the various ports lists in Category:Lists of ports and particularly the overall List of seaports with any new ports articles either created or discovered.
  • Monitor the daily assessment log. The main things to look for:
    • Articles being removed. This is usually legitimate (due to merges or non-ports articles getting untagged), but is sometimes due to vandalism or broken template code.
    • Articles being moved to "GA-Class" and higher quality. These ratings need to correspond to the article's status in the GA and FA lists or the A-Class project review.
  • Deal with any new assessment requests and the backlog of unassessed articles.

Matters for talk page discussion

[edit]
  1. Given the quantity of publicly available technical data, do we want to design a standard format for portraying it in articles?
  2. infobox: We are desperately in need of a ports infobox, ideally as a template for easy use. There is a non-template version on various pages (eg. Port of Los Angeles) which may or may not be suitable as a start;
  3. standard layout: having regard for the current layout used in the GA-class articles and major ports pages including Los Angeles and Singapore
  4. Articles without images: free ports images are fairly easy to come by but many of our articles don't have them. Suggestions for where/how to expand our image use would be appreciated.

Pages needing attention

[edit]
  • Most of the Chinese ports articles are one-line stubs, despite representing some of the largest and busiest ports in the world; see Category:Ports and harbours of China.
  • The actual Ports article needs a fair bit of expansion, including regional variations, an outline ofthe history and common features of ports and an expansion of spaceports and airports which also come under the heading.
