my request to block 212.219.82.37

[edit]

Hello. I have a question: When is a vandal blocked long-term? I reported 212.219.82.37 but you removed the request because the vandal has not vandalized in 4 days. But this user's contributions is exclusively vandalism over many months. So, when is he supposed to be blocked? Thank you. -- Mareklug talk 23:56, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous IPs are usually not banned for very very very long times, but that wasn't my point. My point is that WP:AIV is for "inmediate-like" action, thus it says

Please do not list a user here if: 1. They have not vandalized multiple times very recently

I understand it is listed on WP:VIP, but he seems to have stopped. If he returns, when you see him vandalizing, run and post it to WP:AIV (and also if you like drop me a note here) so we stop him in real time.
The full blocking policy is at [[1]] from where I quote:

Sysops may, at their judgement, block IP addresses whose users vandalise Wikipedia. For dynamic IPs, such blocks should last up to 24 hours. For static IPs, such blocks should initially last 24 hours, but repeat violators may be blocked for a maximum of one month; there are various rules of thumb by which sysops decide how far to extend the blocks of habitual vandals, none of which is formal policy. In general, casual vandals should be warned twice before being blocked, though warnings are not usually given for deliberate vandalism intended to discredit Wikipedia or serve an activist agenda. See Dealing with vandalism for overall policy.

Logged-in users that do essentially nothing but vandalism may also be blocked for the same time periods. However, user accounts that perform a mixture of valid edits and vandalism should not be blocked in this manner.

Blocks should not be used against isolated incidents of vandalism.

I understand what you are saying, but I have to disagree with you where you write: I understand it is listed on WP:VIP, but he seems to have stopped.. He has not stopped. It is his pattern to visit every so often and vandalize. If you look on his talk page you will see a pattern of many months of warnings all the way to test4 and one 24-hour block. So, in essence, he is ripe for a 30-day block. But what you are saying is that this won't be imposed unless he is caught in the act. Does that mean I have to be a policeman and continually look out for him? That is not my idea of a good time. Thank you. -- Mareklug talk 00:27, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, my point was that WP:AIV was not the place for listing it. That's all. WP:AIV is for inmediate action, as in vandals currently engaging in lots of vandalism who need to be stopped as of right now. I'm not discussing if he deserves a long block or not (I think he does), I'm only stating that AIV was not the place. That's all -- (drini|) 00:29, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Then what is the correct place? I have looked and spent a fair amount of time trying to establish that. WP:AIV was the latest place where I turned to. So it is not the correct place, but what is? If you agree that he does deserve a long block -- and you do -- would you please block him for a month? -- Mareklug talk 00:39, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The proper place was indeed WP:VIP. -- (drini|) 00:43, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Drini, there was no reaction to my post on WP:VIP, as seems to be the norm for that page (it seems backlogged). Considering that I now have the pleasure and honor of your attention, do you think you could help me in this situation? What do you suggest I do? -- Mareklug talk 00:49, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If he has really stopped, there's nothing much to worry. If he returns, drop me a note as soon as you notice and I'll block him. -- (drini|) 00:50, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that you considered my contribution to the above page to be an act of vandalism. It certainly was not meant to be such; as to it being nonsense, both factoids are true. Given CG's status in the Radio listening community, certainly not irrelevant either. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hickory 542 (talkcontribs) 18:36, 2 October 2005

212.219.82.37 revisited

Hello again, Drini. The persistent anonymous vandal we talked about and of whom you said to notify you so you can block him if he returns has come back and has vandalized again. He is 212.219.82.37 (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log)

Today he twice vandalized Talk:Main Page/Archive 1 by adding nonsense to the bottom of the page. Could you block him for a month? -- Mareklug talk 21:35, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Did IP 210.81.198.209 really delete the entire Wikipedia:Stub project page??? Or am I misreading the edit history? Finell 03:35, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you refer to [3], no he didn't ""deleted" the page, (as only logged in admins can delete pages) but yes, he blanked it. -- (drini|) 03:42, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's been undone now, so it doesn't matter much, but in the future it would be good if you'd avoid blocking until after there has been a warning in cases of non-persistant, non-highspeed vandalism. The user was just being childish, ... we need them to stop, true, but it's better that we not make any more enemys than we must. One month was also too long considering. The edits in question. Thanks. --Gmaxwell 19:48, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the italicised comments at the talk page in question, specifically the bits starting "If you are an anonymous user and feel that irrelevant comments have been directed at you..." and "Such an IP address can be shared by several users". For reference here is the entire user contribution list for that single ip, there are no edits that have been done anonymously on that ip that haven't been vandalism of Microsoft. Drini owes you no apology, any message left on that talk page was directed at a vandal using that IP address. Mallocks 11:17, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How about some discussion

[edit]

Lets make it True or False for starters

English Measures derive from Roman Measures? Roman Measures derive from Greek and Egyptian Measures? Greek Measures derive from Egyptian and or Mesopotamian Measures Egyptian Measures derive from Mesopotamian Measures?

If you answer at least some of the above as true then it ought to be possible to talk about systems of measures that preceeded the metric suystem without your freaking out

English Measures were independently invented? Roman Measures were independently invented? Greek measures were independently invented? Egyptian Measures were independently invented?

If you answer true to all of the second set it would be good for you to actually read some of the references I have given you.

Accused of Vandalism I don't recall committing

[edit]

You seem like quite the zealous anti-vandalism... guy, and judging from your picture you have mucho tiempo en tu manos. I just want to know what I did that was considered vandalism, since I only remember changing like 2 or 3 pages and all of them were sincere attempts to contribute. I'm expecting a quick reply, but don't need one.

Yeah apparentally it was a Numismatics page or something like that I've never even seen before in my life. I highly doubt it was done on my computer, but I am on a network that keeps telling me I have an IP Address conflict, so I guess that's a possibility... I think you might have just messed up though. It's OK, when you're searching as hard as possible for vandalism sometimes you just make a mistake, don't feel bad. Maybe you need a day off or something. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.210.85.78 (talkcontribs) october 10

Oh, you're talking about this. I wonder why would I get confused. How about this one?. No, I didn't make a mistake. Those were changes done from the 12.210.85.78 IP address. If you're editing in good faith and don't want to get your contributions mixed up with others using the same network, I strongly encourage you to read Wikipedia:Why create an account? and then sign up for an username so your edits are attributed to you even if someone from the same IP address misbehaves. Ah, and please please sign your posts on talk pages -- (drini|) 21:18, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not ban 206.131.30.1.

This is a computer in the media center of a high school that has a population of over 1000 and it would greatly irk future wikipedians. i understand that someone is using this computer to vandalize wikipedia, but it would also have a negitive impact on the school if you were to ban the address. thank you, --Akako 19:42, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It would be a temporary block, but it would only be set if vadalism continues. However, please also keep in mind that school should have policies about good use of network resources. So you may want to notify computer staff to find out who was using that IP at that time so the one misbehaving can get a warning. -- (drini's page|) 19:51, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Heh - without realising that this was in the offing, I've just suggested the same thing myself at VPTechnical. Many thanks for all the warning messages you've left around the page about my IP - and sorry I got annoyed about the block. BTW, something odd - since the block's ben lifted, I haven't been able to create new pages (I get a "resource not found" message each time I try). Any idea what's up with that, or do I need to ask at the pump? Grutness...wha? 12:33, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, i would also like to voice my concern. I've rarely use Wikipedia, mainly to looks up several things in preparation for my finals in a few weeks. But I've just found out about this vandalism that's occuring on this same IP. I live in a large apartment complex in which i believe that are many users on the same IP address. I hope that this problem will get resolved shortly. I might talk to the building management and try find out who the vandal is and hopefully they will cancel their internet connection.

Regards,

John

Gruntness: I have no idea, pump would be better. John: yeah, I was wondering what kind of sittuation you were in (ip of a whole school, and apt, etc). May I suggest "stealing off wi-fi" perhaps? Anyway, if it's the same building nothing than a few metal bats can't solve ;) -- (drini's page|) 12:57, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

huh? you mean a baseball bat or something? So maybe i should approach the vandalist and ask him to stop. But i don't have any metal bats. I could bring a tennis racket and i got some sharp knives and a BB gun. Hmmmm maybe i should go threaten him to stop or something. Do you guys think that would be a bit extreme? - John —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.180.83.6 (talkcontribs) 13:38, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

I was comming home from uni today and when i was going on the elevator, these two guys that was also in the elevator was talking about wikipedia and writing junk on it and getting banned and how you can edit the front page articles. They got off the 4th floor which means it's probably where the culprit lives. I was thinking of putting up a notice or go knocking on each apartment to see which one he lives in and ask him to stop - John

Hi. I notice you blocked this user indefinitely. I am a newbie inexperienced admin still learning the ropes and I am absolutely not questioning the block. But what ruling were you referring to? Regards, RobertGtalk 09:38, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • To the rule of common sense. Unblocked 0101yangl

[edit]

Drini, I've unblocked 0101yangl. You couldn't have known this really, but they're part of a class editing the articles for an assignment.

However, I do have concerns about the quick trigger 3RR blocking because:

  1. You did not even leave a note or try to talk to User:0101yangl
  2. You blocked the person for 48 hours for a 3RR, and standard is 24 hours

Please be careful out there, and don't use the 3RR as something you have to do. It's not always required. Thanks. Fuzheado | Talk 07:36, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah but it's not all to blame on me, as he was removing lots of content, and he never used edit summaries nor discussed on the talk, so it seemed (from this side of the things) like vandalism. I'm looking for a good image to go with the wimped down, er, "revised" message. ;-) -- Essjay · Talk 04:03, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah well, I created that userbox precisely because as "antidote" of that anhiliation button ;). I hadn't noticed that "Be nice to vandals" was moved to "do not insult vandals", which makes even more sense and it's less confusing, so I updated the other button. -- (drini's page|) 04:04, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

stats of afd

[edit]

Oh, I don't much mind them being there if they're done properly. I saw the football-results-like "down to 8 debates and most of the rest are no consensus" stuff and just decided to remove them all because they were incomplete and out-of-date. The stats at WP:AFD/Old are also out-of-date but by much less than a manual update to the AfD front page. There's quite a lot of material on that page at the moment anyway, but if you ask User:Oleg Alexandrov if his bot could call by the page to update the stats whenever AfD/Old is updated, that would at least keep the two in step. I don't think we should have an update-the-count link on the AfD front page because of how often it would get pressed (uses someone elses server to update it) without providing much new info. -Splashtalk 05:06, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote a brief article on my father and was found guilty of copyright violation even though the source page was one I had written on my own site. I have since deleted the page on my site as my interest is to see him listed here. However, the copyright violation remains in effect. What should I do? Thanks for any help you can offer. AlanFraser 20:59, 21 October 2005 (UTC) Alan Fraser[reply]

You should write an article about the subject, about all his life, with original words, trying to keep a neutral point of view (that is, stating facts, not opinions. For instance

"he launched the careers of countless talented doctors and researchers, all of whom benefitted from his brilliance in the classroom" is a subjective statement, a more neutral statement would be "many of his student became doctors and active researches".

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, herefore articles should have an encyclopedic tone, whereas obituaries tend to praise the subject virtues (and not mention the not so virtuous ones, which are needed for neutrality). finally as copyright, keep in mind that text on wikipedia is licensed under GFDL which means ANYONE can modify it and it can also be used in commercial ways. Keep that in mind (this reasons was probably the reason of the copyvio notice as it's likely that such site had a (C) statement not compatible with GFDL. -- (drini's page|) 21:23, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'll take another shot at it. I'm not aware of any restriction on the text but your advice on style is helpful. AlanFraser 07:47, 22 October 2005 (UTC) Alan Fraser[reply]

test templates

[edit]

I noticed you putting subst in my test templates. I'd like to know, is that really such a big deal?Borisblue 05:29, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is important, for a couple of reasons:
  1. It reduces server load; true, one template here or there doesn't mean much, but with the thousands and thousands of times those templates are used every day, it can add up. Further, assuming that we have, say, 10,000 pages with at least one of those templates on it, if any change, regardless of how small, is made to that template, all those pages will be recached, which wastes a lot of server resources.
  2. It is confusing for newbies to see a text message on thier page but find {{test}} in the edit box. Best to keep confusion to a minimum.
subst: is very important, and we should all remember to use it. -- Essjay · Talk 12:04, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Essjay, I must respectfully disagree on the second count. I must say that when I started warning people, I found it very confusing to try to figure out which warning templates have been used and which have not been used; leaving the {{subst:test}} and {{subst:test-n}} series un-subst:d allows an easier way to tell. (For the longest time, for example, I couldn't figure out how the {[test-n}} series worked.) In addition, I also think that the rationale of not wanting to appear cookie cutter (which you did not mention but is often cited as a reason for using subst:) is in fact an argument against using subst:; I think we want the vandals to see immediately how easy it is to pile on warnings and warnings. --Nlu 16:48, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I agree with Essjay, and for the argument of see how many warnings... well you do that when loading the talk page and viewing, not when editing. So I'll continue to subst any unsubsted tempaltes I run across (besides, on an anoymous IP, what good is to know that 6 months ago someone gave him a test4 warn? that warn would not be in effect as of today and thus he would have to be rewarned. -- (drini's page|) 17:07, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Another point in favor of not doing subst: that I just realized; some vandals have a habit of editing and mutilating warnings that are subst:d, not necessarily in a way that is easy to detect. --Nlu 23:01, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
with test messages, they can just delete them -- (drini's page|) 23:06, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but then the deletion is so conspicuous that it's easy to revert. Not as much so if they edit subst'd templates. --Nlu 23:08, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Stylesheet question

[edit]

Hi Drini,

Thanks for your welcome note.

I have started to work on the Calculus wikibook. It would be nice to be able to use css stylesheets to have a consistent way of presenting theorems/examples etc. Is that possible with this software?

Thanks Juliusross 17:40, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a question I don't have the answer. Notice however that each user has its own css file that can edit to customize his wikipedia viewing (for instance, yours would be at User:Juliusross/monobook.css and mine at User:Drini/monobook.css. But accounts are not shared, so my changes to monobook on english wikipedia don't affect my viewing of other wikiprojects (I'd need to change my css on those as well). -- (drini's page|) 18:00, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic Reversion

[edit]

Excuse me, but you may not notice that I am not vandalizing Biff Rose. The quote I added to the page is real, and I did provide a reference for it. You gave no reason for removing it. I feel that it gives an essential understanding of the man's esoteric thought process. 130.74.170.147 05:55, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NO, it wasn't an automatic reversion, I checked. -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 05:56, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Then please tell me why you reverted it. It isn't vandalism, and you did it without discussion.130.74.170.147 05:59, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I NEVER stated it was vandalism. I removed it just like you added it without further discussion. I don't think that quote should really go in the article however. -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 06:01, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
With all due respect, I believe that per standard practice on Wikipedia, additions made in earnest generally do not require explicit justification (although I did include in the article that the quote was an indication to the subject's thought process), whereas the brisk removal of an addition made in earnest, particularly by an administrator, should be accompanied by some explanation. 130.74.170.147 06:13, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, I would have removed that text block as well, from an editing standpoint it's really, REALLY not a good match for an encyclopedia article. Perhaps there are excerpts from it you could pick that would fit better? - CHAIRBOY () 06:21, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, on reflection I think you're right. It doesn't belong there, and it would be better to link to it, or maybe just link to the message board, since Biff Rose does post to it frequently. I just find it disheartening when an administrator completely erases something of relevance to an article, rather than finding a way to incorporate the information in a manner that's in balance with what's already there and what belongs in an encyclopedia. That's why I call it automatic reversion, because it's just a knee-jerk reaction without any constructive merit. 130.74.170.147 06:35, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Admins are also normal editors, and my changes were done in that sense. -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 06:39, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

i am not infringing on copyright. as my earlier post had indicated, I am developing the nautical nellies website and am legally entitled to reproduce all content. as the subject of 'nautical nellie' is not listed on this site to my knowledge, it is acceptable for me, as an associate of and acting on behalf of the copyright holder, and owner of nautical nellies site, to define the term and to define it 'verbatim'... i have taken the offending page ( history.html) offline as proof. so ownership issues asside, the page is no longer online, and, I believe, you have no authority to remove my definition again. i want to include the 'nautical nellie' definition once again... will you delete it this time ? Sir,

There are more than a thousand users behind my company's firewall. I have so far created one article about my hometown and uploaded one copyrighted picture. I have absolutely no idea of that article simply because I'm not going to edit an article about something I don't know fully or about a topic I am not impartial and objective. In a next occasion you come across a page misedited, please ask before you shoot. Displaying such a non-positive attitude disencourages people to help grow and strenghten Wikipedia. Thanks, JewBask —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jewbask (talkcontribs) 11:53, 28 October 2005

I didn't shoot the person. I shoot the IP address. IF thousands of people used the same firewall, it's logical that actions of a user get attributed to all of them. That's why it's encouraged to signup for usernames, so even if many people edits come from the same IP address, they are differentiated.
I see that now you've signed up for an username, so that mistake won't happen again, but I also request you to think before you shoot, the vandalism message was done to an IP address so it wasn't meant to be direct to an specific person, but to whoever that was causing the trouble at that time from that IP. -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 16:52, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, he created several dozens of redirects from article space to his userspace like Idorsoup Idorblog Idorfoo Idorthis etc. After being asked to stop he continued and got his block. Next day we found out that Cool Cat shared the same IP and thus he was hit by the block. After unblocking, idorunet persisted vandalizing pages and creating redirects so other admins blocked him and thus also hitting the cat. And that's how it has been going, so I decided to put a notice on his user page so other admins would not block him for long periods of time. And protected his userpage so he couldn't delete the notice. So maybe I'm an überrogue admin that abused my powers. -- ( drini's vandalproof page ) 20:01, 30 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
