why the duplication?

[edit]

There seem to be a lot of genres that appear twice in this template... Btyner (talk) 02:07, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was because of the use of Template:Electronic music navbox. I've removed it. Hyacinth (talk) 06:40, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

I don't feel "electronica" is the proper name for this template, because it covers various genres, such as eurodance and trance, which don't usually fall under the electronica label. Still, if we change its name to "Electronic dance music", the same problem would appear with other genres in it such as ambient and glitch. Electronic music already has a template of its own (Template:Electronic music), so I'm not really sure what name would suit this template best. Any thoughts? --Λeternus (talk) 15:47, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest to merge "Electronica" template with "Electronic music", maybe additionally add EDM as a standalone template as well. --prokaryotes (talk) 15:51, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But the thing is that there are overlapping genres, which use digital and/or analog devices to produce music (downtempo, lounge, chillout etc) -- so maybe add a "Digital music" genre template? --prokaryotes (talk) 15:54, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Electronic music would do because its titled "Electronic and electroacoustic music", but the current form is kind of "artsy" - I'm not sure it would mix well will the electronic dance side. It would need to be rewritten entirely. --Λeternus (talk) 16:19, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we should merge Electronica with Electronic Music, and have a separate template for EDM? --prokaryotes (talk) 18:55, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current state of template

[edit]

What are the conditions for placing genres in the template? How do we determine the popularity of subgenres? I would cross out a third of the table, while adding many more others from List of electronic music genres. In my opinion, we probably need to either completely get rid of all microgenres here or add everything at once.

Also, in its current form the template looks a bit senseless because of lack of completeness. And otherwise, it would be the same bad if we add many more genres here. Perhaps the separation by decades should be changed to something else, because the table poorly repeats Timeline of electronic music genres, while being less informative. - Solidest (talk) 03:52, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Talking about other implementations of the template, French version 🠮 [fr] seems to be way more helpful, convenient and structured than current English one. Solidest (talk) 16:10, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Two years later and I still haven't changed my mind. Now the template has become even more unreadable and cluttered. I think the scheme of showing up by year just doesn't work with so many entries, it's impossible to navigate through it. Solidest (talk) 03:43, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should we do what was done with Rock music, make a portal called Articles related to Electronic music, and put all the subgenres in here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.54.195.214 (talk) 19:25, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hip hop

[edit]

What's hip hop doing here?! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:C7:C201:C640:84CB:6F5F:8B7F:3CE3 (talk) 18:01, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stop trying to figure it out on your own. Musicologists and music critics are the ones who should be cited for genre connections. Binksternet (talk) 20:11, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Regional scenes

[edit]

We should make a section for Regional scenes that divides genres by region. 47.36.25.163 (talk) 18:46, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
