Banff's young students are heading back to school and can easily forget road safety rules when cycling, skateboarding, or walking to class.

To keep children safe, motorists should:

• Be aware that there will be increased non-vehicular traffic in the areas near the new pedestrian bridge. Use extra caution in these areas.
• Scan farther down the road. You may find it harder to see younger children, especially among parked cars, so be alert.
• Be prepared to slow down and stop.
• Avoid loud music and other distractions when driving.
• Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. Parked or stopped vehicles may be hiding a pedestrian who is crossing the road. The fine is $575 and four demerit points for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk or passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
• Obey the speed limits. In a school zone, the limit is 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. any day that school is held, unless otherwise posted.
• Be sure to remind your kids to only cross at the crosswalks.
• When you drop children off at the school, never pass a school bus when the red lights are flashing.

Getting Rid of Large Items When Moving

If you're moving out of town, don't dump your furniture or appliances by garbage bins. Not only is it illegal, but it's also and an eyesore. The Town of Banff offers a free and convenient Large Item Pick-up service for residents. Be sure to book your pick-up early to make sure staff can get your unwanted large items before you leave town.
