Kayaking

The lakes and rivers surrounding the Town of Banff are inviting because of their serene settings and wildlife. Popular kayaking spots include:

  • Johnson Lake
  • Lake Minnewanka
  • The Bow River between Castle Junction and the Banff townsite
  • Two Jack Lake
  • Vermilion Lakes

For experienced whitewater kayakers, some local routes include:

  • Bow River (Banff Springs Golf Course to Canmore) - Class I to II
  • Pipestone (at Lake Louise) - Class IV
  • Red Earth Creek - Class V+
  • Upper Bow River - Class III to V

Half-day guided tours in inflatable kayaks, including a scenic "calm water" trip down the Bow River, are available from local outfitters. Hourly kayak rentals are also available at the canoe docks in Banff docks at north end of Bow Avenue, also accessible from Wolf Street. Information on rentals is available through Banff Lake Louise Tourism.
