We are joining the rest of the globe to commemorate World Environment Day! The theme for 2024 is “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience” which implores all of us to do our part in restoring our planet. We believe that some of the simple acts we can all do is plant more trees for a happier, cleaner environment. Airtel members of staff, led by Managing Director, Hussam Baday, and Lusaka Mayor, Her Worship Ms Chilando Chitangala visited Yotam Muleya School in Emmasdale where we planted 50 trees together with the Acting Head Teacher Ms Rachel Kangwa and the learners. The Mayor reminded the learners of the importance of not cutting trees for Charcoal as the act was detrimental to the Country’s environment. While Mr. Baday said the country is going through a harsh reality and experiencing an extremely dry season which has resulted in crop losses. “Our resolution is that there can never be enough trees planted and this is why we are here today to plant 50 trees of the 350 that we purchased, and the rest will be planted in 30 other schools across Lusaka,” he said.

Education is a fundamental pillar governing Airtel Zambia’s Corporate Social Responsibility agenda. As part of our partnership with UNICEF, we are thrilled to have had teachers from 50 schools trained to use an electronic education platform known as the Learning Passport. This one day “blended learning training” was conducted by Guillaume Michels, who is UNICEF’s Programme Specialist from Program Group (PG) Education, and Anna Childs, Education Specialist from the UNICEF East Southern African Regional Office. Airtel also provided wi-fi routers to the teachers to connect their respective schools to the internet. Airtel Zambia early in the year signed a partnership agreement with Unicef supported by the Ministry of Education to help accelerate the roll out of digital learning through connecting schools to the internet and ensuring free access to the Learning Passport across the country.   As part of our mission to bring the internet to everyone, everywhere, we are proud to be part of the movement towards improving digital capacity and enhancing the ability of schools to blend digital learning tools with traditional teaching methods.
