Sexual violence in conflicts is a war crime 🛑 Yet too often, perpetrators act with impunity, leaving women and girls to deal with the aftermath alone. Few cases are reported, investigated, or prosecuted, making this an enduring reality of conflict-related sexual violence 🕊️ #EndImpunity #JusticeForSurvivors

A world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled
About us
UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives. UNFPA is the lead United Nations agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. We are making great progress on the African continent. Since 1990, the rate of maternal deaths in Africa has almost halved, and the CARMMA initiative is helping to speed up progress. More women and men are better able to plan and space their children. Young people are more empowered in sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. Yet there is much still to be done. Globally, the region is the most affected by HIV, which remains a major contributor to maternal mortality. Women are particularly affected, young women more so. A contributing factor is gender-based violence, which remains widespread. There are high rates of pregnancy-related school drop-outs. The region also faces an unprecedented rise in the number of adolescents and young people. There is a high population growth rate, the result of a substantial decrease in mortality rates and high fertility in 15 countries. This is why meaningful action is required in the areas of health – including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), family planning and HIV reduction – education and employment to make the demographic dividend work for economic growth and development transformation in the region.

FGM is typically performed on girls under 15 years old, but sometimes in the first weeks of life and occasionally on adult women. It is estimated that some 200 million girls and women globally have undergone some form of female genital mutilation. In Africa, women are subjected to female genital mutilation in 28 countries – this includes Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in East and Southern Africa. In East and Southern Africa, the challenge of FGM is formidable. The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme has been instrumental in supporting survivors and investing in their initiatives. However, the challenge is immense—in 2024 alone, nearly 4.4 million girls are at risk of FGM. To eliminate FGM by 2030, our progress needs to be tenfold of what it is today. 🧠 Mental health is a right, not a privilege! 🌍💙 Our Regional Champion, Shudufhadzo Musida, spoke today at TEDxJohannesburg in support of the 17 SDGs, breaking the stigma around mental health. "Mental health is a crucial part of sexual and reproductive health and plays a significant role in individuals exercising their human rights. HEALTH IS A RIGHT AND NOT A PRIVILEGE. Health at its fullest is a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, not just the absence of disease or infirmity." Let's work towards a world where everyone has access to comprehensive health care. #MentalHealthRights #HealthEquity #WellBeingForAll #TEDxJohannesburg #SDGs

🏝️ Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face rising temperatures, sea levels, droughts, and more frequent extreme weather events. Climate-related disasters have nearly doubled in the past 20 years. With global temperatures surpassing the 1.5-degree threshold of the Paris Agreement, SIDS will experience faster and more severe impacts compared to other nations. #ClimateChange #SIDS #Resilience 🌍
