I was alerted to this free online self care course from Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) for people working in the VAWG/Domestic Abuse/Sexual Violence sector just this morning. I've started working through it and, so far, I'm really impressed. ⚠️Sub-Saharan Africa displays higher rates of gender-based violence (GBV) compared to other regions. However, studies are still limited, both on the factors sustaining GBV and on localized effective prevention measures. 👩🎓This new study explores GBV prevention needs at six universities in five sub-Saharan African countries (Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe). 🔎The study identified some of the barriers to implementing GBV prevention programmes, including patriarchal norms, lack of awareness, and poor institutional infrastructure. You can contribute by ranking the research questions within each of the five domains according to their importance. 📢A ground-breaking study in León, Nicaragua, is the first to measure population level change in the prevalence of intimate partner violence over a 20-year period! 🔎Results show a significant decrease of lifetime and 12-month prevalence of physical IPV over two decades, which the authors do not relate to demographic shifts but to “a true decrease in the prevalence of IPV”. 💫This study supports the assertion that VAW can be reduced through multi-sectoral actions coordinated by governments and civil society, including advocacy efforts led by feminist organizations. These efforts are particularly effective when they increase awareness of rights and access to justice, ensure comprehensive services for survivors, and work to transform restrictive gender norms.
