About us

Every year, hundreds of South Africans with blood diseases such as leukaemia reach the point where their only chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant. For about 30% of patients, a matched donor can be found in their own family; for the other 70%, their only hope is to find a matched unrelated donor identified by the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). The SABMR was established in 1991, motivated by the concern that although bone marrow transplants were a life-saving treatment option, they were only available to patients with a matching donor in their family. Today, the SABMR searches both locally and internationally for donors, thereby making collaboration with international registries and observing universal standards of practice essential. An internationally recognised registry, the SABMR is a member of the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) and was founded in Cape Town in 1991. Its mission is to save lives and provide hope for all patients in need of bone marrow stem cell transplantation and future therapies, by creating awareness, expanding the Registry, embracing evolving technology and enhancing stakeholder relationships to the benefit of the community. The SABMR has over 73,000 donors on its database. Through its participation with Bone Marrow Donors worldwide, the SABMR has access to over 31 million donors worldwide. Registered as a non-profit company and a Section 18A Public Benefit Organisation (Reg No 2013/152553/08, 004-003 NPO), the SABMR is governed by a dedicated Board of specialist professionals.

  • 𝗦𝗔𝗕𝗠𝗥 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 Yesterday, the SABMR team embraced the spirit of giving back on Mandela Day. At the Groote Schuur Hospital Outpatients building, our team treated awaiting patients to coffee and sandwiches on a frosty Cape Town morning. We headed to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, where our staff socialised with a few animals, cleaned their enclosures, and participated in a programme on animal welfare. We then visited Soil for Life, an NGO in Constantia that assists the community with a sustainable food garden, where we got our hands dirty with gardening activities and learned about organic farming. A few team members also delivered beanies, teddy bears, toiletries, and toys to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. These items were sponsored by generous SABMR supporters, and we shared smiles, thumbs up, fist bumps, and even did some dancing with the children. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined and donated, especially Pam Poplett, Nandlal Govan, Dale Booyzen, and Maureen Adland for their contributions. Your support helps build a stronger, more connected community. Together, we continue to honour Mandela's dream of a better world for all. Let's keep Mandela Day's spirit alive every day, striving to make a positive impact. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. 💙🙏

Becoming a stem cell donor is a life-changing way of making a difference in someone's life. Stem cells are undifferentiated or the body's raw materials - cells at which other specialized cells arise from. When these cells are transplanted into patients, they can treat detrimental conditions such as leukemia and other blood disorders. The process of stem cell donation needs to be safe and simple as donating blood. Donors need to register before they can donate. Stem cell transplants require an almost-perfect genetic match, this allows for diverse and widespread donor registry to be critical. Many patients with blood cancers and other severe conditions depend on the kindness and generosity of strangers to find compatible stem cell donor, and thus the participation of donors increases the chances of finding compatible stem cells for patients worldwide, this participation gives hope for recovery and a healthier future not only to patients but to their families as well. For many patients, a stem cell donation is their last hope of survival. We urge you to register and potentially donate as this could be the miracle someone has been hoping for. This commitment requires only a small amount of your time but is a priceless gift to someone. "Stem cell donation: One small step for you, one giant leap for a patient in need".You can visit www.sambr.co.za for more info on how to become a stem cell donor. South African Bone Marrow Registry

  • The Patient Care Pack initiative programme was started as a means to alleviate the emotional and psychological burdens faced by financially strained families. The contents of the care packs are specifically designed to occupy and bring comfort to patients while they are isolated before and after the procedure. At the heart of these care packs, lie tangible expressions of compassion and empathy, carefully curated to address the unique needs of patients. We need your support to be able to roll this initiative out country-wide. By donating items or by means of a financial donation, you will directly be impacting the lives of patients, providing them with tangible support and a reminder that they are not alone in their fight. Together we can make a significant difference in their lives and bring a sense of hope and comfort during this difficult time. To make a financial or physical item donation, contact Zaahier Issacs, our Head of Patient Services via email at patients@sabmr.co.za or call our head office at 0214478638. A drop-off facility will also be available at the SABMR offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. You may also DM or comment below and we will get back to you in a heartbeat! #CarePackInitiative #DonateNow #SupportPatients #CommunitySupport #HelpOthers #SpreadKindness #MakeADifference #HealthcareHeroes"

Last week we had the incredible honour to witness and help facilitate a first-time donor recipient meeting at the International Donor Registry Conference. Ramabele Tsolo (28) from Johannesburg, met his donor Pete Johnson (62) from Texas USA for the very first time in half a decade since his transplant. Our friends at SABC sat down with the two after their meeting and filed this report. Heartwarming indeed. Moments like these make what we do so much more worthwhile! https://lnkd.in/dJ7CUGJS NMDP
