  • It is no secret that digitalisation is driving business productivity forward at a rapid pace, and businesses that don't jump on board quick enough will be left behind entirely. So where does the African entrepreneurial ecosystem currently stand in terms of digitalisation? In a recent research series released by the IFC - International Finance Corporation and The World Bank Group titled "Digital Opportunities in African Businesses", researchers delved into answering this pressing question. Here are some key insights and statistics that arose from the report: 🟣 While ensuring that all firms have access to digital technologies is essential, its full benefits will only be reaped if companies use them for business purposes. With 23% of digitally-enabled firms not using digital technologies for core functions such as business administration, planning, sales, and payments, and only 24% of firms intensively using the best technology they have already adopted, digitalisation remains a work in progress on the continent. 🟣 The continent’s mobile internet ecosystem is thriving. Most firms in Africa, including microbusinesses, have access to mobile phones. More than 50% of businesses with five or more workers have computers with internet, rising to 80% for medium and large firms. 🟣 When looking at how formal firms (with 5 or more workers) are using advanced tech, they found that digitalisation has occurred mostly in terms of payment methods (61.8%), with other business functions trailing behind in the following order: marketing and product development (36.2%); business administration (35%); sales channels (30.3%); sourcing and procurement (29.2%); and production or service operation planning (27.4%). 🟣 Three overarching barriers are impeding the path to fuller digitalisation: lack of infrastructure, high prices of technology, and insufficient funding. 🔗 For more key insights and access to the full report, click here: https://lnkd.in/d6cvYMeP #MotseCollectiveImpact #MotseSA #SocialTransformation #EntrepreneurshipEcosystem #AfricanBusiness

  • Happy Mandela Day! 🇿🇦 Today, we celebrate the profound impact that Nelson Mandela made in South Africa and across the world with his unwavering commitment to resilience, reconciliation, leadership, freedom and equality. Although Mr. Mandela primarily practised these noble principles in the realm of politics, they are principles which can and should be practised across all domains of society, including entrepreneurship. In honour of the 67 years Madiba dedicated to public service, businesses and individuals across the country are taking out 67 minutes today to give back to our communities in some way. How is your organisation getting involved in Mandela Day? #MotseCollectiveImpact #SocialTransformation #MandelaDay #LegacyOfUnity #CollectiveImpact

  • The ecosystem says: "Financial Data is Essential" – we heard you. In June, we posed a question about data-driven approaches in the form of a LinkedIn poll. The poll question stated: "What types of data do you think are most essential for the current African entrepreneurial ecosystem?" The results were as follows: 🟡 Financial: 44% 🟢 Human Capital: 22% 🟣 Infrastructure: 17% 🔵 Governance: 17% So the jury has spoken, financial data it is. As a follow-up to this conversation, let's explore the topic a bit further by exploring some of the data that already exists ⬇️ In the recently released African Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Index, scores were assigned to each country for 7 challenge areas, of which Finance represented one. To calculate the financial scores, researchers drew on the following 3 financial indicators and data sets: 1. Domestic Credit to the Private Sector - World Bank World Development Indicators 2. Venture Capital - Partech Data 3. Stock Market Capitalisation - Stock Market Statistics Interested to know more? • Are you wondering what's going on in the minds of South Africa's born-free generation? 🇿🇦 💭 In an exciting new project titled '30/30/30', Flux Trends and Student Village have partnered to gain insight into the personal, professional and political views of South Africa's Generation Z. 30 years after the dawn of democracy, they sat down for 30 interviews with 30 under-thirty South Africans to ask questions about their home, work and public lives. Here are some key insights from Dion Chang: 🟡 The omnipresence of side hustles shows a strong entrepreneurial streak. 🟢 Family bonds are strong with a notable slant to female role models. 🔴 While happy and optimistic, it is also noteworthy that many have turned to therapy. 🔵 Although politically apathetic and disillusioned, there is a sense of agency and a clearly defined strong social-justice barometer. This report is critical to understanding the way things are expected to go in the workplace, the public sector and the social realm. As stated by Flux Trends, "This project aims to help civil society, political leaders, corporate South Africa and elders in general understand and work with rather than against their future" For the full interview delving into insights from the report with Bronwyn Williams, Dion Chang and Ronen Aires, click here: https://lnkd.in/d_v9NeAr For the full report, click here: https://lnkd.in/dSUjxtjd #MotseCollectiveImpact #MotseSA #FluxTrends #SAEcosystemBuilders #Entrepreneurship #SABusinessGrowth
