Creating a safe space where children come to learn maths and leave having learned much more.

About us

MathMoms is a women's initiative powered by nurturing love that builds confident communities one maths empowered child at a time. We have three overarching aims: (i) improving the academic results of foundation phase learners; (ii) employing and training unemployed women; and (iii) creating safe spaces with healthy, continuous relationships, thereby healing trauma and building resilient communities. MathMoms was founded in response to challenges faced by our communities - gangsterism, unemployment - and the desire to tell a different kind of story - one of hope, of communities that care. We achieve our aims through weekly training sessions (for the women), and teaching Grade 2-4 learners maths and literacy skills in extra lessons. From a small beginning in 2016, when we piloted our programme at a school in Elsies River, we've grown to 17 schools with 12 Mentors, 53 MathMoms, 25 interns and an estimated 1000 learners in 2020. In 2020 we scaled to other communities, with a new YearBeyond intern programme at schools in Bishop Lavis, in partnership with the Department of Sport and Culture’s After School Office. In 2020, our Grade 2 programme was rolled out at schools in the Rawsonville area. We aim to have 13 Mentors, 70 Moms, 60 interns, and 1600 learners involved this year.

Bubbling with joy 🎈 Over the weekend we facilitated two 'Managing Self' sessions at the YearBeyond #GoBeyond conference. Eighty YeBoneers attended our sessions, where they learned about their nervous systems, what happens when they experience stress or trauma, and how they can self-regulate to unlock joy and positive sensations again. What a privilege to be part of this conference, and to listen to the experiences of these incredible young people. We loved participating! Thanks to everyone who came to our sessions.

I teach professionals how to speak, listen and connect

What an phenomenal day with incredible speakers, performers and attendees 😍 This past weekend I attended and spoke at TEDxStellenbosch. I left with a full notebook, stimulated mind and a fulfilled heart. Thanks to all of the speakers for sharing their work and passion with us. Prof jansen opened with the importance of care and love in teaching, Jane spoke about how being teachable and curious can lead to a more inclusive society, Ella showed us how we can develop a child's skills through play and Jean proved that future-readiness-training was possible even in the most marginalised communities. We then went for tea and engaged with some of the brilliant minds and leaders in attendance. Roy took us on a journey of visualisation, Thembalethu gave us how to practically realise social justice, Nicci showed us the impact of adverse childhood experiences and how to engage with them and Judy-Ann highlighted how one can practically influence the attitudes and beliefs of individuals born in tough circumstances. Wayde spoke about the power of education, opportunity and mentorship in transforming lives, I spoke about how communication skills can enhance life and student success and Jana closed us off by sharing how to transform the education system. Thank you to Delecia and the TEDxStellenbosch team for organising this event, Zimbili for coaching us through our talks, the performers for inspiring us and the attendees for engaging us. #TEDxTalk #TEDxStellenboschED #communicationcoach #publicspeaking #firstofmany

A very special day at Valhalla Primary yesterday... Eight years ago around this time we launched our pilot programme here, and its success led to the establishment of MathMoms and our incredible growth to other communities and schools. We listened to the stories of two of the Moms who joined the programme in 2017 and to the experiences of the current Moms, and celebrated with the principal, Mr Speelman, and Mr Appolis, the janitor, who was of great help to us in setting up the programme at the start. Thank you for 8 wonderful years, Valhalla!

https://lnkd.in/dSAZm8Fb A-B-Change There is a little alphabet-game you can play to test your vocabulary. You take a four letter word and change it, letter by letter, into a word that means something opposite, but with each word in between still making sense. For instance: LACK – SACK – SICK – SILK – SILT – SIFT – GIFT By changing the word, letter by letter, you have moved from lack to gift. We can extend this: by changing a word or two, we can change the meaning of a sentence: “What do you lack?” can change to “What is your gift?” By changing words, we can change our conversation. We can move from: “What do you lack? What can we (or they) do about it?” to “What is your gift? How can you make a difference?” In MathMoms, we work together toward changing our communities by changing ourselves, and changing ourselves by changing the way we think and talk about ourselves. MathMoms is not about a “we” wondering what “they” (leaders, politicians, other people) are going to do to make things better. It is about “us.” It is also not about “some of us” (mentors, for instance) who are the experts and who will make things better for “the rest of us” (the Moms and the learners). We all need to learn and we all bring gifts and wisdom into the conversation we share among ourselves. We are all searching for the best way forward and we all have some light in us to show us the way. We aim to improve our learner’s mathematics by our tutoring. We also aim to impart important life-skills through building significant relationships in which our learners are seen and heard and respected. But in the process, we learn from our learners, and we discover the ways in which they have gifts to give. Perhaps that is the most important gift we can give them: to take their gifts seriously in a world where those gifts are so easily overlooked and even denied. In the same way, our mentors work with the Moms to improve their skills in tutoring Maths and to enrich their lives in various ways, especially by helping them to discover their own resilience. But every mentor is also in a learning process, learning from our Moms, being enriched by the Moms giftedness. And so, along the way of our ordinary work, we change ourselves and we change the conversations we have. A conversation about what we lack, and how we expect others to do something about it, creates despair, disillusionment and passivity. A conversation about our gifts, about the difference each one of us makes, creates hope. That is the conversation MathMoms strive to live by. Read more about how we are trying to change the conversation in our 2023 Annual Report. Sonja Cilliers
