About us
Good Governance Africa (GGA) was established in 2012 as an independent, registered non-profit organisation – with offices in South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana – with the aim of promoting better governance in Africa to improve the lives of all citizens. We research, analyse and interpret information aligned with our focus areas across context-driven centres in Africa. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is taking a bold step by deploying a military force, the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), to combat rebel groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This follows the withdrawal of previous peacekeeping missions, which were criticised for being ineffective. However, achieving lasting peace in the DRC will be a monumental challenge. The region is plagued by numerous rebel groups, a complex history of conflict, and a weak central government. Can SADC succeed where others have failed, or is SAMIDRC destined to become another casualty of the seemingly intractable conflict in the DRC? SABC anchor Leanne Manas is "angry" and "heartbroken" and has had her life disrupted after her identity was stolen to create deep fake video advertisements, causing investors to lose their life savings on online trading platforms like Banxso ™. In the recent edition of Africa in Fact, Good Governance Africa's Nnaemeka Ohamadike discussed how AI is a double-edged sword of disinformation. While it facilitates the creation and dissemination of disinformation with frightening ease through deepfakes and other AI-assisted fabrications, it also offers robust tools for detecting and combating fake content. Ohamadike highlights several key AI techniques that can be employed to identify and mitigate fake content: https://lnkd.in/dicABpwb

I'm thrilled to share some exciting developments following the Electricity Wheeling Conference 2024 (EWC) held in Cape Town from 4-5 April 2024. Just three months later, South Africa's largest wheeling project was officially commissioned in Lichtenburg, North West, marking an impressive 200MW renewable energy boost. This project is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in driving economic growth and sustainable energy solutions. During the recent Opening of Parliament Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised the prioritising of renewable energy, recognising its crucial role in the nation's energy revolution. This aligns perfectly with the EWC's key recommendations: forge bold partnerships between Independent Power Producers and the state's power producer to supercharge energy diversification and strengthen energy security. The strides we're witnessing are a direct result of collaborative efforts and the commitment of stakeholders across the board. Let's continue to support and engage in these vital initiatives as we work towards a sustainable and prosperous energy future for South Africa. Kudos to The SOLA Group, Tronox and Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd for their remarkable achievements and dedication to transforming our energy landscape! 🚀👏🏾 #RenewableEnergy #ElectricityWheeling #PublicPrivatePartnerships #Sustainability #EnergySecurity #SouthAfrica #IPPs Good Governance Africa

The Nedbank Top Empowerment Conference was a powerful testament to South Africa's unwavering spirit. The two-day event brought together a diverse group of thought leaders, all united in their commitment to economic empowerment and social justice. Key figures like Mfundo Nkuhlu, COO of Nedbank, and Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Deputy President, set the stage for critical discussions. Nkuhlu's anticipation of the Parliament Address mirrored the national yearning for economic growth. Mlambo-Ngcuka's honest assessment of South Africa's challenges, particularly the lack of collaboration and the plight of the "born frees," ignited a sense of urgency. The conference wasn't just about identifying problems but crafting solutions. Discussions on creating brand strategies aligned with the national agenda, fostering sustainable community initiatives, and dismantling unconscious bias offered practical steps towards a more equitable future. Dr. Matthews Phosa's poignant address on Nelson Mandela Day was a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against inequality. The Nedbank Top Empowerment Conference wasn't just a conference; it was a catalyst for change. It left attendees with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to building a brighter future for all South Africans.

I was honoured to attend the Opening of Parliament Address for the 2024 Government of National Unity (GNU) in the Republic of South Africa. It was an inspiring experience, especially on Mandela Day, a reminder of Nelson Mandela's legacy in fostering unity and reconciliation. President Cyril Ramaphosa outlined the three strategic priorities for the GNU: 1. Driving inclusive economic growth and job creation. 2. Reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living. 3. Building a capable, ethical, and developmental state. Wishing the 7th Parliament every success as they embark on this crucial mandate. Here's to a prosperous and united future for South Africa! 🇿🇦 #OPA2024 #GNU #MandelaDay #Madiba #SouthAfrica #EconomicGrowth #JobCreation #PovertyReduction #EthicalGovernance #Unity #7thParliament #SustainableDevelopment Good Governance Africa

Today, on Nelson Mandela International Day, we commemorate a leader who dedicated his life to dismantling the systems of poverty and inequality. But the fight does not stop with one day of reflection. 2024 is an election year for almost 50 countries, a moment when millions will cast their ballots for a better future. This year's South African Opening of Parliament Address holds even greater weight. A new government shaped by diverse voices can chart a course that tackles inequality head-on. However, true change requires action beyond the halls of power. In our daily lives, we can choose ethical consumption, volunteer for local causes, and hold leaders accountable for their promises. Each step, big or small, contributes to a more equitable society. #NelsonMandelaDay

With Paul Kagame poised to win Rwanda's presidential election with 99.15% of the vote, discussions on optimal governance models for African citizens will flood newspaper columns in the weeks ahead. Dr Ross Harvey's article, "Why the allure of the 'Rwandan Model' is misplaced," argues against the idea that Africa needs autocrats for economic progress. While Rwanda performs well in certain institutional metrics, the suppression of civil liberties and rising unemployment rates suggest a flawed system. Contrasting Rwanda with democratic nations like Kenya and Zambia, Harvey underscores the importance of inclusiveness for long-term success and stability: https://lnkd.in/dVud-qD9 https://lnkd.in/duvyfUzp
