Meet Our Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors consists of individuals passionate about youth issues in North Dakota. They are located in Bismarck-Mandan, Minot, and Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo communities.

Dan Ulmer

Chairperson

Member Since 2013 - Dan is recently retired after a career spanning public service, governmental affairs, and human services. Earlier in his career, he served as the Executive Director of the Police Youth Bureau in Bismarck, as well as Executive Director for Easter Seals. More recently, Mr. Ulmer held the position of Assistant Vice President of Government Relations for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota. Mr. Ulmer has previously served as a State Legislator for District 34 and on Mandan’s City Commission. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Village Family Services, Fort Lincoln Foundation, and Bismarck/Mandan Development Association. Dan has been married for 42 years, with three children and four grandchildren.

Mike Eggl

Vice Chairperson

Mike Eggl, has long term experience and training in public policy, legislative affairs, economic development and business administration.

After graduating from the University of North Dakota, Eggl worked for U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) in Washington, D.C as a legislative assistant handling the issues of energy, natural resources and the environment. Later, Eggl worked as Director of Economic Development for Senator Dorgan in his Bismarck, ND, office.

Eggl moved from Senator Dorgan’s office to take a position of Vice President of Government Relations at Basin Electric Power Cooperative and was thereafter promoted to Senior Vice President of Communications and Administration. From Basin Electric Eggl moved to Yellowstone Strategies, focusing on community and energy issues.

Eggl is also deeply involved in Brave the Shave, a non-profit which he, along with a number of colleagues, started in 2007 to help raise funds for children’s cancer research and to support the families impacted by the disease.

A graduate of the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, Eggl holds a bachelor of science degree with a major in history (1992) and a master degree in public administration (1994).

Thomas Hill

Thomas Hill serves as the Community Relations Program Manager for the Essentia Health’s West Market. He is the community relationship expert for Essentia Health’s West Region and is responsible for developing and implementing community outreach across Essentia’s West Market and promoting Essentia Health’s image in a positive and community-oriented way. He leads the administration of Essentia Health’s community giving to meet community needs and maximize strategic operational priorities. Prior to joining Essentia Health, Thomas spent fourteen years at United Way of Cass-Clay, serving most recently as the Vice President of Community Impact. That role involved building and executing on the external investment strategy, including grantmaking, community sponsorships and all funding requests. In addition he led public affairs and served as the primary liaison between schools, nonprofits, and local government entities for how United Way leveraged their resources in the community. Thomas is a US Army veteran (2000-2004) and was stationed overseas in South Korea on the demilitarized zone and was deployed with the MN National Guard to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2003 on a humanitarian demining peacekeeping mission. Thomas and his spouse Linny are raising two wonderfully rambunctious children, Shepherd & Vera and make their home outside of Fergus Falls, MN. When not working or chasing after children, Thomas enjoys drumming, raising backyard chickens, kayaking and cross-country skiing.

Sashay Schettler

Board Member Since May 2023

Sashay Schettler is the Director of Indian Education for Bismarck Public Schools.  She is a citizen of the MHA Nation and previously served as a Cultural Responsive Coordinator for the district. Through her work with her established team, Sashay aims to change the narrative of Indigenous education within public school systems.  She aims to close the opportunity gap for Indigenous students and empower them to be leaders within their communities and beyond.
