Serving approximately 8,000 individuals each year, YWCA SHR is a source of strength, courage, and empowerment for women and families facing crisis. We are a community catalyst for meaningful change and the advocate for shaping vital impact through quality services responding to the critical needs of survivors of sexual violence and domestic violence. YWCA SHR works across racial, gender, religious, and social lines with organizations - partners in all sectors to educate about disparities, advocate for change, and provide resources and tools to dismantle oppressive systems.
What we do
YWCA South Hampton Roads is dedicated to empowering women and eliminating racism by providing the following core services:
Crisis Services
YWCA offers comprehensive support services for those affected by violence including shelter, advocacy, medical accompaniment, and respite childcare.
Counseling Services
YWCA provides crisis short-term and long-term counseling to victims, significant others, and other friends/family members affected by the violence.
Advocacy
YWCA works to initiate social action and advocacy activities to eradicate racism and improve socio-economic conditions for all people.
Outreach
Specialized training on interpersonal violence awareness and risk reduction is available for area schools, universities, military, and the community.
Racial Justice
YWCA South Hampton Roads is committed to eliminating racism through several avenues: advocacy, education, events, and training.
Volunteer and Intern
We offer diverse volunteer and intern opportunities for dedicated and passionate community partners interested in eliminating racism and empowering women.

Conference on R.E.S.T ~ Racial Equity and Social Transformation
R.E.S.T. 2024 was an amazing experience! Thank you to NSU's Center for African American Public Policy (CAAmPP) and our many supporters for an incredible conference. R.E.S.T. allows us to examine our region's ties to race and racism, and forge a path towards racial healing and equity.
This year’s theme, We the People, focused on the people who despite being excluded from the US Constitution, managed to not only build our nation but define it. We were able to center their voices, perspectives, and work towards what is needed from all of us, for communities to thrive in today’s constant fight for equity and justice.

Volunteer / Employment
YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. For over 160 years, YWCA has been a leader in addressing the most challenging issues of the day, including women’s rights, safe labor laws, civil rights, affordable housing, pay equity, violence prevention, and health care reform. Today, our programs and services around the U.S. serve over 2 million women, girls, and their families. And we combine programming and advocacy to move the needle on three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, health and safety, and empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls.
