Chad’s 5-star review:
Alto recently got upgraded to 2 Michelin stars, so we went to check it out before seeing "A View from the Bridge". I completely understand why they got upgraded, because the food, service, wine list, and total experience is fantastic.
We opted for the create your own 4-course option because then we could get 8 dishes (instead of 7 on the prix fixe) and pick exactly what we wanted. For antipasti we started with the seared scallops and the beef tartar, both of which were juicy and tender.
We followed that with a round of pasta, the Tagliatelle with braised veal ragu and the Egg/spinach ravioli with crispy sweetbreads. Seriously, these were some amazing pasta dishes. I love that cutting into the ravioli results in egg yolk spilling out, as if you just cut into a over-easy egg. I'm not sure how they do this but it's very cool.
For meat courses we went with the seared duck breast/duck sausage and the braised beef short ribs. I really enjoy 'Hen of the Woods' and the chef was willing to add them to the vegetables with the short ribs. The flavors in both of these dishes were great, and both meat courses were wonderful.
For dessert we went with the Torrone (hazelnut cake and nougat semifreddo drizzled with chocolate) and Panna Cotta (honey roasted pears with buttermilk sorbet).
I don't want to say that Alto is as amazing as Daniel because there is a certain quality at Daniel that makes it special. But the experience at Alto is NEARLY as good, so the price/performance ratio is great. If you like food, you should give this place a try, and it's only a short walk to the broadway shows afterwards!
If you like big, bold wines, try a glass of the Monardiere 2 Monardes Vacqueyras 2007. Yes it's an Italian restaurant, but this french wine was the favorite of everything I tried (including the Barolo!)
