Hi Margot - Yes, you can typically pre-order and pay via our on-line store at jdflannel.com. We had our on-line store turned off this week given how busy we were for the July 4th holiday. Our on-line store is now back up and running. Thank you… more

My niece was visiting from New York and asked us where the best donuts are at. My husband mentioned JD Flannel cause he had seen a reel about them on IG. We were already planning on lunch at Heritage BBQ, so I was pleased to see JD Flannel was very close to there, perfect!
We ordered 6 donuts to take home. The only one I wanted to try was Brown Butter Sea Salt, but I did take bites of others. DANG that Brown Butter Sea Salt was just perfect, loved the salty glaze on it! Triple Chocolate was an intensely deep chocolate flavor that was reminiscent of the crunchy edges on freshly baked brownies. I also had a bite of Boysenberry, a flavor I don't usually like, but I am now a fan of that berry in donut form!
Their donuts are quite large and they are all gorgeous to look at. I don't get down to SJC all too often, but JD Flannel will definitely encourage me to make that drive more frequently!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 4Oh no 0 - Becca B.San Diego, CA01Jun 30, 2024
Could not recommend enough! Their donuts are the best I've ever had. My sisters and I all have celiac disease and come here often for the gluten free donuts. They are the only gf donuts we've had that don't have a cake like dense texture. We have never gotten so much as a stomach ache. We bring our non gf friends here as well and they love it just as much. Really appreciate them offering a safe gluten free option that tastes so fantastic! So many options as well!

Thank you, Catalina, for making us your guilty pleasure go-to! The triple chocolate and lemon blueberry are great recommendations as are the chocolate chipper and apple bear claw for the month of June! We appreciate your review, and we look forward to your next visit! Best, John and Dave

I'm not really sure my review is needed to express the absolutely wonder, excitement and greatness of this business. I mean, pretty much everyone else rates it high as well.
I, as with may others, stopped here after hearing about this being (According to Yelp) the Best Donut Shop in California this year. I had a business trip planned to San Diego from Pasadena and stopped on my way back on 07/24/2024.
I have had a lot of donuts in my life (not necessarily a good thing); however, this are hands down the best donuts I have had so far in my life. I'm not even sure what it is about them. They just taste different, they just taste fresher, they seem to pack more flavor.
I got six donuts today. I tried a sample of each one of them. I got the Brown Butter and Sea Salt; Banana Chocolate chip, Buttermilk Old Fashioned, The Dinger, Tropical Delight and Blueberry Lemon.
They were just all fantastic. Can you start franchising...I might just open one here in LA county!
In all seriousness, just amazing. And thank you for having very friendly staff. That makes all the difference, and I look forward to stopping by again in the future.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 7111158Jul 22, 2024
Amazingly delicious donuts. I can understand why this was voted as a Yelp favorite. The donuts are soft and fluffy and not doughy. They also offer gluten free options which taste the same as the regular donuts.
The lines are manageable even though it was a weekend. The donut shop is in a plaza with plenty of parking. The only regret is not ordering more. We would definitely come back here for high quality donuts.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - FoodFindsMe ..Laguna Beach, CA20483925Jul 13, 2024

We were in the area to grab lunch but arrived before the location opened. With time on our hands, we walked to JD Flannel to grab something to-go.
There was a line out the door, but it moved quickly. It gave us time to see what flavors were available and see fresh donuts being made. I really wanted to try everything and debated on grabbing a half dozen, but husband got sticker shock for one donut lol. Instead, I settled on two to see if it's worth it.
The boysenberry ($4.50) was a vanilla cake donut with topped with a house-made boysenberry glaze, which was truly bursting with berry goodness. I could crush a few of these in a sitting, but interested in trying their Blueberry Lemon next.
The seasonal Mexican Chocolate Churro ($5.50) blew me away! It was a raised donut tossed in cinnamon and filled with Mexican chocolate ganache and topped whipped cream. It took me two days to finish as it gets a little sweet and heavy, but every bite was heavenly.
Since the flavors rotate seasonally, I'm excited to see what other combos they come up with. It's a special treat to enjoy when you wanna treat yourself and yes, I think it's definitely worth a try.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

Jamie - We are so glad you had a chance to stop by our shop! We also appreciate your patience as our line sometimes does get a bit long, but our staff works very hard to keep serve our guests quickly but without rushing anyone who needs a little extra time selecting their donut. You chose two great donuts (John grew up with boysenberry vines in his backyard), and we are excited for you to try the blueberry lemon the next time you are back in town. You are also right to point out that our prices are higher than your typical donut shop, but we are committed to using the best ingredients we can without using pre-made mixes or artificial flavors or colors. Our seasonal donuts this month are The Dinger (similar to a gourmet Ding Dong), Cinnamon Swirl, Banana Chocolate Chip, and Tropical Delight...all perfect summer time flavors! Thanks again for your visit and your great review, and we look forward to the next time you are able to stop by. Best, John and Dave

I came here because I had to try the Best Donuts in California. I thought it was good.
These are the juiciest donuts of my life. Every bite was oily, but it still somehow felt light.
Of all of them, the old fashioned was my favorite. It was very crispy on the outside with that juiciness inside. Reading other reviews, I don't think any of these were supposed to be juicy.
The chocolate was good. The chocolate is way better quality than regular "chocolate donut" dipping. Solid choice and not too sweet.
The Mexican Chocolate Churro donut had clashing flavors. The actual donut doesn't have much cinnamon flavor despite being packed in cinnamon. The cream was good. The ganache had a very strong chocolate flavor, with a bit of bitterness. It tasted like it had coffee, but the description online suggests I'm wrong. Together, you get some bitterness and big strong chocolate ganache flavor with light creamy flavor and a light and fluffy donut, I don't think it's very successful.
Vanilla bean was definitely a sharing donut. It's super sweet, eating 1/4 of one would be AMAZING. Any more and my sentiment falls off a cliff because the sugar hit.
My second picture is the chocolate donut inside. It has an air cavern right below the surface and you can see that light oil layer. It's not bad, just unexpected. All in all, I'm a little surprised it's the best donuts in California, but overall I thought it was good.Helpful 4Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Food (5/5 stars):
This is the best donut I've ever had. I found JD Flannel Donuts and Coffee in San Juan Capistrano on Yelp's Best Donuts in the US, and I can confirm that it's the best in CA. The donuts were fluffy and had a nice lightness to them. The Maple Bacon was heavenly. The maple was fresh and perfectly sweet while the bacon was thick, fatty, and caramelized to perfection. And they didn't skimp on the maple or bacon--every bite transported me to my happy place. If you're in the Orange County area or willing to make the trip, you must try JD's!
Experience (5/5 stars):
* Price: worth every penny
* Wait Time: minimal at 11 on a weekday
* Service: very good and friendly!
* Parking: there's a parking lot
* Ambiance: very nice, modern shopHelpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Michael U.Las Vegas, NV35845619168549Jul 4, 2024
In So. Cal one is never far from a Donut shop, and although JD Flannel Donuts & Coffee in San Juan Capistrano only opened in 2019 their focus on quality Ingredients plus old-school technique has rocketed them to stardom including a recent ranking as California's best Donut per Yelp!
A small batch shop in the middle of a Strip Mall, flanked by launderers and vitamins, guests line up before the 7am opening Wednesday through Sunday for seasonal flavors such as plump Blueberries in moist Cake enrobed by tangy Lemon Glaze.
The brainchild of John Miller and Dave Rhode, J and D respectively, it is inside the shop that guests will notice a bakeshop buzzing with activity while servers rush to keep up, though after one bite of a faultless Bear Claw filled with Apples, Cinnamon and Cream any inconvenience is quickly forgotten.
Similarly priced as Sidecar or Blue Star, roughly $5 a piece, fans of Old-Fashioneds will find JD Flannel's crisp overlying the melt-in-your-mouth center while Pure Maple and Chocolate Chipper range from simply delicious to overly-complicated yet unforgettable.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0Business owner information

Michael - Thank you for giving us a try, and thank you for such a thoughtful review! You have a way with words that is borderline poetic, and we appreciate your comments on our various flavors for the month! Both the apple bear claw and chocolate chipper are fan favorites when we have them on the menu, and the brown butter sea salt and blueberry lemon donuts are staple flavors that our guests love to order. We are thankful for you taking the time to write about your experience, and we hope we have the chance to serve you again in the near future! Best, John and Dave (owners)

We are back! JD Flannel Donuts heard me and have done an amazing job ensuring that the Blueberry Lemon donut has blueberries! See my photo posted on 5/4/2024!
I visited JD Flannel on May 4th and got myself a Blueberry Lemon and Old Fashion donut. These are my two favorites from JD Flannel! The Blueberry Lemon had blueberries throughout the inside of the donut - I was more than pleased. :)
The donuts were so good even thought they weren't warm. Yes, I'm often spoiled when I come to JD because their donuts are usually still warm when I get them. On that particular morning, both of the donuts were not warm, but they had a perfectly crispy crust with a moist/soft interior. It was delicious!
Service was amazing as always! Thank you JD Flannel for your hard work - your passion for your shop and the people is admirable!Helpful 26Thanks 12Love this 32Oh no 0Business owner information

Sandra - Thank you for coming by again and leaving an updated review. Let us get directly to the point and say that we are embarrassed that our blueberry lemon donut did not contain any blueberries. That simply is unacceptable. Moreover, you had politely messaged us several months ago telling us that this donut did not have many blueberries in it when you last visited. We are very sorry about your experience, and while we thought we fixed the original issue with getting sufficient blueberries in the dough, we clearly did not. This is inexcusable.
To be clear, we do place a lot of blueberries in our dough. The measurement is done by weight to ensure consistency. However, we have been receiving very large blueberries over the past several months so that while the weight is correct, the actual number of blueberries that make it into the dough has decreased considerably. This means that when the dough is cut into rings, an insufficient number of blueberries are making into the donut. We should have recognized this sooner and made adjustments, and we are embarrassed to communicate this reality.
Going forward, we will be adjusting the type and amount of blueberries we use for this donut. We are very hopeful that this will solve the issue since a donut called "blueberry lemon" should contain blueberries! We have also direct messaged you to let you know that we would like to offer you a box of blueberry lemon donuts free of charge. We hope we have the chance to tangibly demonstrate that we are serious about our craft and care deeply about getting all of our donuts right every time. Thanks again for taking the time to leave your review, and we hope to see you again sometime soon. Best, John and DaveJan 12, 2024Previous reviewI still love the great tasting donuts and super friendly service here at JD Flannels! So much that I would drive half an hour one way just to get these!
My favorites are Buttermilk Old Fashion ($4.25), Maple Bacon ($5.50), Blueberry Lemon ($4.50), and Brown Butter Sea Salt ($4.50). While Blueberry Lemon is one of my favorites, I have concerns about this one. If you look back on my photos (dating back to my very first visit here back in 2020 to my most recent one in 2024), there have never been any blueberries inside the donut. For a donut that they claim on their Instagram "infused" with blueberries, my cross section shows that it is nowhere near infused, let alone any blueberries for that matter. Back when Blueberry Lemon was a regular item in the shop, they used the word "chock-full" of blueberries, and that also wasn't the case. Now, why do I still like this Blueberry Lemon donut? Well, the lemon glaze on top is perfect, and it's still an overall very good donut. I just wished it had the fresh blueberries that they claim. For this reason, I decided to take away a star even though my previous review was 5. I'm either unlucky every time, or it's pretty consistent that there are no blueberries in the Blueberry Lemon donut.
Either way, I still love the donuts here at JD Flannel - they are one of the best gourmet donut shops! If their donuts don't make you smile, their friendliness will!Mar 11, 2023Previous reviewIt's been a while since I made my way to JD Flannel Donuts. It's a half-hour drive one way for me, which is why I don't frequent this place. Otherwise, I'd be here every week!
I love the donuts from here! They are quality donuts with a great fluffy interior and crispy exterior. Their seasonal flavors are innovative and usually a hit for me. They also offer a few varieties of gluten-free donuts each month. My usual favorites are the Blueberry Lemon, Buttermilk Old Fashioned, and Maple Bacon. One thing to note about the Blueberry Lemon is that it's really more of a lemon donut than it is blueberry. There is hardly any blueberries in there. They used to be filled with fresh blueberries, but there is hardly any blueberries each time I get it.
Nonetheless, still love this place and wish there was one closer to me!May 30, 2021Previous reviewJD Flannel Donuts and Coffee continues to be my favorite gourmet donut shop! I used to frequent other popular gourmet donut shops, but not anymore since I've found JD Flannel!
I always feel so happy walking out with their donut box because their blue and white flannel design is lovely and unique! One of the store owners (either J or D) is always here to greet / chat with customers. He is super friendly and is always happy to see everyone.
The donuts are consistently beautiful and delicious! My favorites are the Blueberry Lemon, Old Fashioned, Maple Bacon, and Brown Butter Sea Salt. They have some unique flavors that rotate each month so always check their website if you're looking for something different from their regular flavors.
I really wish they were closer to me because my coworkers and I would definitely make weekly visits :).Sep 19, 2020Previous reviewI'm a fan of JD Flannel's donuts!
I came to realize that they are quite addicting after my first visit a few months ago. Whenever I can make the trip down to SD, I definitely schedule a stop here for some donuts. They're yeast donut is so good and all of their donuts are fresh, not greasy, and taste amazing!
I found a new favorite, the Smoked Apple Fritter. Moist yeast donut with just the right amount of apples and cinnamon inside. The exterior is crispy without being oily and just the perfect amount of glaze that is not overwhelming. It's also a sizable donut that I think is perfect to share.
I also liked the Boysenberry cake donut because of the slightly tart glaze and again, crispy exterior with a moist cake center. However, I wish there were some boysenberries in the batter to make the berry taste stronger. Either way, I think that this Boysenberry donut is still a good one to try when they have it in (I think it's seasonal).
Another thing to note is the service. Every person who works there is super friendly, especially the owner (either J or D). He tries to greet and chat with all of his customers and has a positive attitude. Great donuts and service - come check them out!Jul 16, 2020Previous review[[UPDATE on 7/16/2020 (later in the day)]]
I received a message from John and Dave of JD Flannel donuts explaining their method of making their yeast (raised) donuts that results in a more moist and airy donut that can result in the "chewiness" I was referring to in my review this morning. After some careful thoughts and consideration, I believe that the chewiness of the raised donut is just a personal preference of mine and not JD Flannel Donuts mistake. Since their raised donuts are intentionally made to give this experience, I do think that it is worth trying if you've not had their donuts before because you may like it - I especially liked the Peach cobbler flavor!
John and Dave also explained that they are training new crew members for glazing donuts and therefore I received a different donut for the Blueberry lemon, hence there was a lack of blueberries.
I respect that this establishment listens and tries their best to meet customers expectations as they have given me a refund for three of the donuts I purchased and offered me to try their Blueberry Lemon donut on the house next time so that I can taste/see the difference. I have changed my rating based on how much I liked the cake donuts (particularly the Old fashioned), level of customer service, and just how great looking this place and their donuts are! Thanks John and Dave!
[[ORIGINAL REVIEW with some edits on 7/16/2020 (earlier in the morning)]]
I really wanted to like JD Flannel donuts since the pictures and reviews looked very promising! However, I was a bit disappointed with most of the donuts I ordered today.
The good:
Online ordering is clean and simple with visuals to see what the donuts will look like (not the blueberry lemon one... for one, where is the blueberry on top and inside?). I placed my order for pickup right when they open at 7am and the pickup process was quick and the owner was friendly. The best donut out of the four I ordered was the Old fashioned. The cake donut was moist with a good flavor and not overpowering on the nutmeg or glaze on top. The Blueberry Lemon comes in second because they do cake donuts well, being very moist and all, but it seriously lacked blueberries (see photos). I didn't taste any blueberries in it at all... but if this was called a lemon donut, it's pretty good. -- The owners sent me a message that I received a regular cake donut with lemon glaze by mistake as they are training new crew members, so it really should not be reflective on the Blueberry Lemon donut as they described the donut should have been "chock full" blueberries. :)
The unexpected:
I tend to like raised donuts for their light and fluffy interior texture. The two raised donuts I got today were the Peach cobbler and Chocolate. Both of the donuts flavor were good, but the texture of the donut was chewy. If you like a bit of chew in your raised donut, then I suggest the Peach cobbler since the flavor was really good. I'm just not a fan of the chewy texture. I'd like to make note that if you like mochi donuts, then you'd probably LOVE their yeast (raised) donuts because the chewy texture reminds me of that. -- The owners sent me a message that their yeast donut recipe intentionally creates a moist yeast donut. This is true because I do feel that they were moist and slightly chewy, so it just wasn't what I was expecting since I'm used to eating yeast donuts that are not moist with a slightly chewy texture.
Having tried two cake and two raised donuts, I would highly recommend their cake donuts based on my experience today, but would still recommend their yeast donuts because if you've never had a moist yeast donut that resembles a mochi donut, then you have to try this. Since JD Flannel is a bit of a drive for me, I may not be coming back for a while... but I would consider stopping by again to pick up some cake donuts when visiting friends down in San Juan area.
