If you are going to use them, be prepared to stay on top of them so things are done in the time frame you need.
Overall my items were safe and nothing was damaged so I'm thankful. However, they are slow communicators and with moving, permits, etc. you have to stay on top of things so they won't be of much use there.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cami L.Rodeo, CA1188Jan 27, 2024
What the hell is going on at the Ubox located in Hayward CA? After a decade I get an email asking me if I want my property? Wtf? What property? I will keep calling Monica and she hasn't called back but sent another email. UHAUL management please call me back 3603618030.

We moved to Idaho and used the U-Boxes. The guys that dropped them off put 2 on our driveway sideways. Monica cane to pick them up and was AWESOME unloading and loading our boxes which were on a hill. It looked like she wouldn't be able to get one of the sideways boxes off the driveway due to the crazy hill we lived on, but Monica did not give up until she was successful! I was impressed watching her work that forklift and get all the boxes loaded and labelled. Thank you SO MUCH, Monica for your bada$$ skills! VERY IMPRESSED and friendly!

Reasonably priced and great work!
I've used Door-to-Door twice now to move between CA and TX and they were amazing. They were less expensive than their competitors by 25%-50%. They were on time, friendly, helpful, and efficient. Dropping off the container, picking it up, and getting it to its destination went smoothly both times I've used them.
I also used their storage services in Hayward, CA and that was great too. It's slightly more expensive per month to store with them than with a normal self-storage place, but since my container was already packed and I only needed 3 months of storage, it was well worth it. To access the container you have to give them 24 hours notice (before 12pm the day before) but then you can just drive straight up to your container to access it in their giant warehouse (after showing ID and signing in, etc.).
These folks are all great and I absolutely 100% recommend them!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 21, 2011Updated review
I am now happy reunited with my stuff on the east coast, but my final experience with Door to Door made me feel like i was buying steroids on the Black Sea Riviera... wild escapades in the Brooklyn dock district involving Cadillac Escalades and people battling for my parking spot.
The bottom line is that the cross country delivery service has some problems. We almost missed our costly and complicated connection because the local person had been given a wrong telephone number for me.... not the first time D2D has flaked.
I would use Door to Door for local storage in SF again in a heartbeat, but not for cross country. And yo, Friscans, be glad you are in a place where the numbers on streets have some logic and there is room to organize your shizz.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 12, 2010Previous reviewI trusted Door to Door so much than when we sold our home with stuff still inside, I asked our realtor to just transfer those possessions into three Door to Door cubes. A few months later, some issues have surfaced. These aren't reason to not use them, but they are things to be aware of.
1. Door to Door no longer delivers near my new home, so transferring my boxes would cause me to rent a truck and drive hundreds of miles to pick them up. Not cool. Did not expect they would orphan my boxes, which now need to be managed by a commercial mover.
2. Those boxes really get beat to shit in the warehouse. I went down to organize my stuff and the hardware was so mangled I could not get them open. Luckily the staff loaned me a hammer to whack on them some more till the lock came off.
3. Door to Door is CLOSED on Wednesday and Sunday. Meaning you are SOL if, like me, you roll into town and Wednesday is the only day you can do it. Now paying three months extra rent till I'm in town again. Like I said, this is something to be aware of.Aug 9, 2009Previous reviewThis review starts out at 5 stars because Door-to-Door was 60% cheaper than pods.com on a cubic foot basis (don't just compare the total price because the boxes are different sizes), even including paying extra to have it delivered outside the service area. The drop-off happened exactly as the efficient telephone rep said it would and the efficient driver briefed me and it was then easy to load and secure the box. All good.
But then we plummet to one star because I got an email a few days later saying my box had arrived at the destination (from which it would be delivered locally) but it was damaged in transit. I called the friendly rep and discovered she works for "Moving Staffers", a company that manages the transport but doesn't actually do it. She gave me the number for the real rep at the real Door-to-Door but calls to that number were never returned. So I wait nervously for my local delivery date. And... the stuff shows up, the movers are incredibly professional and friendly and all my possessions are intact.
I talked to Moving Staffers after this and discovered that, for moves outside their service area, Door-to-Door hands off the management to Moving Staffers and the local delivery to a third party company. They need to be more transparent about this, so I'm docking them a star. When it comes to my worldly goods, I want to see that man behind the curtain! - Hali M.San Francisco, CA13186170Sep 22, 2015
I had a truly horrendous experience with Door to Door. My friend and I stored our things there for 6 months while we were abroad and for the summer. Poor communication, poor customer service, and additional charges for problems they create. DON'T USE DOOR TO DOOR! They made moving a complete nightmare - expensive, exhausting, and frustrating.
Things went smoothly at the beginning - the pod was dropped off as expected and all of our things fit in the pod.
The problems started when we began scheduling our dropoff when we returned to school. We chose our desired drop window 36 hours after sign ups opened, and were told that no spaces would be available until the Tuesday after school started, leaving us without any items for many days. When I called customer service, I was told that they had "overbooked" (they were completely unapologetic) but that we could schedule an appointment with the warehouse to pick up our boxes. However, I was told I would not be allowed to set a pickup appointment until 24 hours in advance (which turned out to be false, as I learned when I called in a second time).
I then hired a mover to pick up our things. I called in again and was told that even to pick up my things from the warehouse, there would be an extra $40 charge. So now I had an extra $40 charge, along with costs from having to hire a mover. Additionally, I was told that if we did not move out our things by Saturday (and they would not be able to deliver until Tuesday), there would be an additional $59 charge for an extra month of service. Because of Door to Door's original inability to deliver, we were suddenly facing all of these additional charges along with the hassle of having to transport our things from the storage unit (40 minutes away) to our dorm.
My friend and I eventually received our items but it was absolutely not thanks to Door to Door.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Monica S.Jacksonville, FL413112841350Jun 23, 2010
When I found out I was moving from fair Philadelphia to the East Bay, first I thought "oh yay!" followed quickly by an "oh my." I had shit. Lots and lots of crap that I'd accumulated over 8 years of living in Philly.
First I called PODS. They wanted to charge me close to $5000. Um yeah. No. NEXT.
Door to Door. After the PODS quote, I was expecting to hear something like $3000 for a cross country move. But no! To my surprise they only wanted $1500. Genius. Sold.
So they came with a week's notice. We loaded up the container (I got the smallest one they offer which was plenty of space for my stuff). I got friends, they helped carry the heavy boxes and bed and within 30 minutes, the container was ready to go... and it did. All the way to California on its own little roadtrip.
Tip to save money: if you can load up your container within 30 minutes, they won't charge you extra. Have friends help you, their drivers won't lift a finger (understandably).
A month later, I move to Oakland, I notify the lovely folks at D2D, and they have my belongings delivered to my street. And just like that, I'm in a foreign land sleeping in my oh-so-familiar bed and cuddling with my drool covered teddy. Ahhh, bliss.Helpful 17Thanks 0Love this 14Oh no 0 - Clay D.Santa Rosa, CA1122May 28, 2013
I'm also in the process of my move.
I was really bowled over by the quality of customer service from Door-to-Door. Their sales professionals are waaaay more attentive and thorough than the competitors'.
Cleverly, there are VERY FEW pictures on their website of their storage/moving containers, because if there were, you'd see that the containers are TIIIIINNNYY!
Like HOBBIT TINY.
I am a pretty staunch minimalist, and I can't even fit more than my Queen Bed and an Ikea TV stand in the thing.
And OFF THE WALL expensive for the storage/moving space you receive.
I guess the customer is paying for that great service.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rachel E.Houston, TX105986305Aug 23, 2013
I used Door to Door for my move from San Francisco to Houston, TX. From the very beginning, customer service was amazing. I talked with Christian and it was like having a personal guide. He treated me like a human, he called back when he said he would... it's the little things.
Hint: Initially they were "full" on the day I wanted my containers dropped off. When I said that would be a deal breaker they magically opened up a space and made it happen. So ask and you shall receive.
My window was pretty large, 7 -11 or 8-12 or something like that. My containers were delivered by the nicest guy, Milton, right on schedule at 7:30am. I had reserved spots in front of my building and when some cars stupidly ignored the no parking signs, Milton was able to fit the pods around them so I wouldn't incur a re-delivery fee.
NOTE: It is YOUR responsibility to get a permit through the city of San Francisco if you want guaranteed street space for your containers. It is not Door to Door's job. If they show up and you do not have a spot reserved, that is not their fault.
The containers are 5 x 7 x 8. This is slightly larger than a UBox (5 x 7 x 7.5) and smaller than a POD (7 x 7 x 8). To me they seemed plenty big and I was able to fit my large 1 bedroom apartment in 2 containers. (With the help of professional loaders.)
Door to Door was way less expensive than all of the other competitors I looked at, and in the middle of my move they changed their service so that my stuff actually got unloaded for me out of the container and into my apartment for NO EXTRA FEE. See my review of Graebel movers in Houston who Door to Door contracted with. They were superb.
The reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that my stuff was initially set to arrive at their warehouse on August 12th. Then I received an email saying it would arrive on the 14th. And when I called on the 15th, it was scheduled to arrive that day. By the time they called me to set up a delivery date (which they won't do until the containers have arrived at the facility), the first date they could deliver was August 20th. Considering they picked up my containers on July 30th, that seemed like a long time. But overall a very positive experience.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lee D.San Francisco, CA10439Jul 16, 2010
I used Door-to-Door to move from Boston to San Francisco.
The Boston end of the experience was great. Getting a quote was easy (HUGE HINT: don't be afraid to bargain with these folks), delivery and pick up of the container was a breeze, and the reps were friendly and responsive.
It wasn't until we arrived in San Francisco that things began to fall apart.
- We weren't told that they don't block off space beforehand for delivery. Apparently, they expect you to reserve a spot with your car and, when the container is delivered, they'll drop it in your car's space. Well, our car doesn't have SF permits yet ...
- Bizarrely, they couldn't truly confirm delivery because they wouldn't know until they actually drove onto the street on the day of delivery whether the slope of the street was too steep for the container.
- I was given a window of 2pm to 5pm for delivery. At 4:30pm I received a call from the local facility saying that they lost our container and wouldn't be able to deliver it. Apparently, the SF facility is moving to a larger space and my container was lost in the shuffle. To find it, they started taking a complete inventory of the ~3,000 containers on site. In 24 hours they had only gone through 800 containers.
- Now I'm looking at the following worse case scenario. It takes them 4 business days to find my container (they seem to be able to review only ~25% of their inventory per day). They re-request a permit (another 2/3 days). They finally schedule a delivery 8 business days after my originally scheduled delivery date.
This situation has become a frustrating nightmare. I would not recommend using Door to Door to anyone.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
