A 96-year-old Shrewsbury woman died and five others were injured in a vehicle crash in Adams County Thursday morning, according to officials.

Fuji Smith, 96, of Shrewsbury, was killed in the two-vehicle crash on East Berlin Road at the on-ramp to Route 15 Northbound in Tyrone Township that occurred around 11:31 a.m. on July 4, 2024, state police and the Adams County Coroner's office confirmed.

An autopsy is planned for Smith, due to the nature of the crash, said Adams County Chief Deputy Coroner Scott Pennewill.

Smith's cause of death will not be determined until the coroner's office gets the results of the autopsy, Pennewill said.

According to a press release by Pennsylvania State Police, a Nissan Rogue SUV, occupied by four members of a family from Texas, was headed eastbound on East Berlin Road when it made a left turn towards the on-ramp to Route 15.

The SUV did not yield to an oncoming Subaru Outback, which was headed westbound on East Berlin Road, and the two collided, the release states.

Smith was the passenger in the Subaru Outback, and was transported to Gettysburg Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Both Smith and her son, who was driving the Subaru, had seatbelts on, said Pennewill.

The drivers of both vehicles, ages 71 and 39, and three passengers in the Nissan Rogue, ages 34, 1, and 8, were all believed to have sustained suspected minor injuries, the release said.

Both drivers and two passengers were transported to York Hospital, according to the release.
