What other Yankees merit a spot in All-Star Game?

The reveal of the American and National League starting lineups for the All-Star Game earlier this week included a few surprises, including Trea Turner of the Philadelphia Phillies earning the starting spot at shortstop over Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the AL, the Yankees took control of the outfield with starters Aaron Judge and Juan Soto manning center and right field, respectively. Judge received the most votes in MLB with 3,425,309. 

After the starting lineups were set by a vote of fans, reserves and pitchers for the game will be determined via a combination of player ballots and decisions from the commissioner's office. That announcement will be made on Sunday.

There are 12 spots available for pitchers and 11 more for position players. Here are three more Yankees who deserve a spot in the All-Star Game in Arlington, Texas, on July 16.

Anthony Volpe | Shortstop

The 23-year-old New York native has broken out this year after struggling in 2023. Volpe has hit well, posting a .253 average with six home runs, 30 RBI and 15 stolen bases on 19 attempts. 

Volpe is overshadowed by fellow AL shortstops Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals, who are each putting up MVP-caliber seasons. With Henderson earning the starting spot, Witt Jr. and Volpe should be the backups.

Luis Gil | Starting pitcher

Despite his recent struggles, the young right-hander has dominated opponents halfway through the season. Through his first 14 starts, Gil maintained a 2.03 ERA with a 9-1 record. But after losing his last three outings, the once-stellar ERA now sits at a respectable 3.41 with 102 strikeouts.

At one point, it looked like Gil was destined to be the AL starting pitcher. Despite his recent struggles, Gil has been the ace in New York and fans should expect to see him in the bullpen. 

Clay Holmes | Relief pitcher

Holmes, who didn't allow an earned run through his first 20 appearances, is the backbone of one of the league's strongest bullpens. Currently third in the AL in saves with 19, Holmes has struck out 37 batters in 35 innings.

The right-hander is looking to represent New York in the All-Star Game for the second time in his three years with the Yankees.
