PERRY COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The Housing Development Alliance Hope Building Program was created to give those overcoming addiction a chance to re-enter the workforce.

Lindsey King, a mother who struggled with addiction, joined the program in 2021.

“She was in the Perry County Recovery Court program, and she didn’t want to go back into working fast food. So, she applied for the program, and when I interview her, she said, ‘I’m a single mom and it’s not gonna hurt me to learn how to do this stuff,’” said Hope Building Program Director Shannon Gabbard.

King has become an assistant trainer in the program.

While working to build other homes, King was accepted into HDA’s low-income based housing program.

She received the keys to a new home on Wednesday.

“This is what I’ve been chasing after, and we finally got it. So, it means everything. Neither one of my kids have ever had their own room. So, that’s a pretty big deal for them,” said King.

Lindsey King said the best part is having a yard for her kids and dog to play in, as well as her own laundry room.
