HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - In September 2015, the historic Grand Hotel in downtown Hazard was consumed by flames.

Now, nine years later, the place where people once gathered to stay overnight is now a gathering place again.

“It was such a big part of our downtown. So, to lose it to the fire several years ago, was a big hole. So, we didn’t want to lose that history along with that building. This is a way kind of to help bring that legacy forward, even though we no longer have the building,” said downtown coordinator Bailey Richards.

Now, the outdoor space is known as “The Grand.” It is home to this event and others like the upcoming North Fork Music Festival.

The Appalachian Arts Alliance hosts Thursdays on The Grand to promote local food vendors, artists and musicians.

“Appalachia is deeply rooted in our arts and culture heritage here. So, we have to pass that tradition along. Having opportunities to showcase that, where they can witness it being demonstrated, where people in our community can buy local and support. That is vital to our continued existence as a community,” said Appalachian Arts Alliance Executive Director Tim Deaton.

Musician Nathan Coots knows just how much that support from his hometown means.

“I like doing it because I’m out a lot playing everywhere else,” he said. “I like being able to come home and play in front of hometown people when I can.”

The Hazard High School cheerleaders used this event to raise money for camp.

“The cheerleaders are here helping, earning their money. Their parents are here. It’s real hot, but we can enjoy the heat if everybody comes out and helps support these girls,” said Lisa Allen.

The next date for Thursdays on the Grand will be announced at a later date. For more information about Thursdays on the Grand, click here.
