According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department, the incident happened early Monday morning when four kids all around the age of 14 left the Appalachian Children’s Home and made their way into the school buses at the Knox County School Bus garage nearby.

After they were able to hot-wire one bus, they attempted to drive through the gate but were unable to get the gate off of the bus so they parked it.

After taking a second bus, the minors were able to drive it all the way to Lexington before crashing into a utility pole of some sort.

In the aftermath of the events, officials said they have a lot of questions.

“Our question is how did they make it off the campus all the way to the bus garage and even were prepared for getting on the bus, taking things apart to activate, and get it on the road to go north,” said Frank Shelton with Knox County Schools.

Officials with the Appalachian Children’s Home said that they had no comment on the situation.

The sheriff said the minors will face charges for this and will be placed in another facility.
