TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD/Gray News) - A man in Arizona has died days after a bee attack while doing maintenance at an area golf course.

Authorities say Rick Messina was working at the Pusch Ridge Golf Course in the Oro Valley on June 24 when he was the victim of a bee attack.

Messina was a member of the golf course’s grounds crew when tragedy struck.

He was working on the eighth hole when he was attacked by a passing swarm. Messina was taken to the hospital, but he died three days later.

El Conquistador Golf members were sent a message last week confirming Messina’s death.

“Rick was a dedicated and cherished member of our team, known for his exceptional work ethic, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to his duties. His sudden passing is a profound loss to our work family and our community. He will be deeply missed by all,” El Conquistador Golf representatives said.

After the attack, professional beekeepers inspected all 45 holes at the club for bee activity and none were found, the golf course reported.

Officials reminded everyone to be mindful in the region regarding bee activity as summer is the peak season for bee swarms.
