NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Summers are hot in Middle Tennessee, there’s nothing usual about that. But this much heat this early on isn’t all that common.

An official heatwave is defined as three days at or above 90 agrees and we’ve certainly exceeded that in the last few weeks.

We see 90s every summer across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky so it’s not surprising to feel the heat, but it is unusual just how relentless the heat has been early on.

Since the start of June, we’ve seen four heatwaves across the Mid State. From June 13 to July 8 we only had four days that dropped below 90 degrees compared to 22 days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees.

So far there have already been 23 days with temperatures of 90°+ and on average Nashville sees 49 days of 90°+ heat a year.

BREAK FROM THE HEAT

We’ll get a much needed, but brief, break from the heat on Wednesday. Temperatures will stall out in the 80s for the afternoon and the humidity will be much more bearable throughout the day.

Enjoy that break, because it won’t last long.

5TH HEATWAVE OF THE YEAR

Temperatures are right back in the 90s on Thursday, which will officially start our 5th heatwave of the year for the Mid State.

Highs on Friday push into the mid 90s with a heat index near if not into the triple digits once again.

Three more FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAYS are in effect for Saturday, Sunday and Monday with highs in the upper 90s and heat index values exceeding 105°.

This new wave of heat looks relentless with highs expected in the 90s for the remained for next week.

It won’t be until the following week where the heat releases it’s grip on the Mid State and cooler weather can work its way back in.
