NEBO, N.C. (WBTV) - Three people were killed after a missing airplane crashed in McDowell County on Monday morning, according to emergency management officials.

Officials said a small plane that had been reported missing was found near the McDowell-Rutherford County line at Brackett Town Road and Vein Mountain Road.

Officials said search and rescue efforts were underway and that “all available resources are being utilized.” The public was asked to avoid the area while authorities tended to the situation.

The identities of the deceased have not been released.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating incident,” a spokesperson wrote. “We appreciate your understanding and respect for the privacy of the families involved during this difficult time.”
