Maryville man dies after firework explodes near his chest

The BCSO report states that a man and some friends were shooting fireworks by holding them in their hands when a firework exploded into his chest.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Maryville man died after suffering a chest wound from an exploding firework on the Fourth of July, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

BCSO responded to reports of an unconscious person around 11 p.m. on Thursday night at Evergreen Farms Lane. The BCSO report stated that when deputies arrived on the scene, they saw three people performing CPR on the victim, identified as Matthew Sellars.

According to the report, deputies took over CPR duties and held pressure on Sellars’ wound until AMR arrived to take over.

The report stated that Sellars and some friends were shooting fireworks by holding them in their hands when a firework exploded into Sellars’ chest, causing him to fall to the ground, bleeding with a large, gaping hole in his chest and a cut on his right hand.

Sellars was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. and was transported to the Blount Memorial Hospital by AMR.

According to BCSO officials, no one was charged or cited for this incident, and there were no other injuries.
