NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A man was arrested Tuesday after police say he severely injured a woman by beating her with a baseball bat.

Phillip Mitchell, 44, is charged with attempted criminal homicide.

On June 21, Metro Nashville Police Department officers responded to the area of Winfrey Street and Fairfield Avenue where they located the woman lying on the ground. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where doctors said she had a broken leg, deep cuts to her shin and head, and bruising on one of her arms, according to an arrest report.

Detectives interviewed the victim, who said Mitchell had attacked her with a baseball bat by hitting her repeatedly.

She told detectives she didn’t know why Mitchell stopped, but she was able to get help after Mitchell drove away in a F-150 pickup truck.

Police said Mitchell had previously hit the woman with his vehicle. The victim said during that incident, Mitchell told her every time he saw her he would beat her until he eventually killed her, according to the arrest report. He could have killed her during this latest attack, she said.

Police were able to identify Mitchell, and he was booked on Tuesday.

He’s charged additionally with aggravated assault and kidnapping with intent to terrorize.

Mitchell is being held on a $200,000 bond.
