LEBANON, Tenn. (WSMV) - Fans are getting ready for a big weekend of racing at Nashville Superspeedway, but extreme heat is going to be dangerous when cars start their engines.

More than 70,000 people are expected to go to the track for the three days of races despite a heat index approaching 110 degrees.

Track officials said they’ve added a lot of staff this year to help keep people safe. That includes more medics, ushers and cooling station operators.

The superspeedway is encouraging fans to bring ice packs and their own water bottles. There are a number of free water filling stations around the grandstand.

“We’ve got a lot of ice and a lot of water for the whole family,” J.T. Thomas said. “It is going to be a fun in the sun kind of weekend here at Nashville Super Speedway.”

Fans already staying at the campgrounds have coolers filled with lots of water to stay hydrated with between alcoholic drinks. Many people are also using industrial sized fans and tents to beat the heat.

“When you do need to take a break, you have to take a break inside the RV,” Troy Briesch said. “Get out of the heat all together. It all starts with hydration and that starts days before the event.”

The first 15,000 fans through the gates on Sunday will get free cooling towels. The track is asking fans to look out for each other and report any heat-related issues to staff.
