Evansville stuns Tennessee to force game three in Knoxville Super Regional

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Tennessee fell to Evansville 10-8 on Saturday, forcing a game three in the Knoxville Super Regional.

TOP FIRST INNING

After a leadoff flyout from Christian Moore, Blake Burke launched a home run over the centerfield wall to give Tennessee an early lead | Tennessee 1, Evansville 0

Dylan Dreiling provided Tennessee’s second solo homer with two outs in the first | Tennessee 2, Evansville 0

Hunter Ensley made it back-to-back Tennessee homers with a solo shot to the leftfield porches | Tennessee 3, Evansville 0

All three Tennessee hits in the first were home runs.

BOTTOM FIRST INNING

A spectacular diving grab by Kavares Tears in right field ended a 1,2,3 inning for Drew Beam.

TOP SECOND INNING

Dean Curley drew a leadoff walk to open the inning.

Cal Stark nearly missed a home run off the top of the leftfield wall, putting runners at second and third with a double.

Christian Moore walked to load the bases.

The walk prompted a Purple Ace pitching change.

Donovan Schultz lasted one inning, allowing three runs.

Schultz was replaced by Jakob Meyer.

BOTTOM SECOND INNING

After a leadoff walk, Drew Beam struck out Brent Widder for the first out of the inning.

Beam’s second strikeout of the inning ended the frame scoreless.

The Purple Aces retired the Vols in order.

BOTTOM THIRD INNING

Beam completed another 1,2,3 inning in the third. Beam allowed just one baserunner through the first three innings.

TOP FOURTH INNING

A one out double from Bradke Lohry put a runner in scoring position with one out.

Evansville escaped the inning without allowing a run. Blake Burke grounded out with runners at first and second.

BOTTOM FOURTH INNING

Drew Beam picked up his fifth strikeout of the day to open the inning.

Beam allowed his first hit of the day with one out in the inning on an infield single.

Beam’s first extra base hit on a double to leftfield.

Evansville’s first run of the game came on an RBI groundout | Tennessee 4, Evansville 1

After a mound visit, Tennessee escaped without further damage.

TOP FIFTH INNING

Dylan Dreiling drew a one out walk to bring up Hunter Ensley. Dreiling stole second, putting a runner in scoring position.

Ensley grounded out to third for the second out of the inning.

Kavares Tears laced an RBI double to right, extending Tennessee’s lead to two | Tennessee 5, Evansville 3

The Aces stranded runners at first and second to end the inning.

BOTTOM FIFTH INNING

Brendan Hord led off the inning with a single through the middle of the infield.

A fielder’s choice put a runner at second with two outs.

Kirby Connell relieved Drew Beam following Fougerousse’s RBI.

Beam pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out five Evansville batters.

A double down the right field line put runners at second and third with two outs.

Kirby Connell was removed after one batter. He was relieved by Nate Snead.

Cal McGinnis continued his impressive weekend with a go-ahead single looped down the rightfield line. McGinnis was tagged out trying to stretch the single into a double to end the inning | Evansville 6, Tennessee 5

TOP SIXTH INNING

Max Hansmann became Evansville’s third pitcher of the day to begin the inning.

Christian Moore drew a one out walk to put the tying run on base.

Blake Burke made it back-to-back walks to put the go-ahead run at first.

Billy Amick struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.

A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third for Dylan Dreiling.

Dreiling grounded out to end the inning.

BOTTOM SIXTH INNING

Evan Waggoner led off the inning with a single.

A two run home run off the bat of Brennan Hoard gave Evansville a three-run lead | Evansville 8, Tennessee 5

After a hit batter, Andrew Behnke came in for Nate Snead.

Snead finished the day with two earned runs on four hits in one inning of work.

Nick Smith came on in relief to begin the seventh.

The Vols were held without a baserunner in the inning.

Evan Waggoner’s second hit of the day put a runner at first with two out. Harrison Taubert moved Waggoner into scoring position with a two-out single.

Behnke stranded both runners with a strikeout of Brendan Hord.

TOP EIGHTH INNING

Reese Chapman pinch hit to open the inning for Bradke Lohre. Chapman struck out swinging.

Evansville held the Vols scoreless for the third straight inning.

BOTTOM EIGHTH INNING

JJ Garcia took the mound to open the eighth.

Garcia retired the Aces in order. Sending Tennessee to the plate needing five runs to extend the game.

TOP NINTH INNING

The Vols put runners on first and second to open the inning with a walk and a single.

A walk to Dylan Dreiling loaded the bases with no outs.

A bases loaded walk pulled the Vols within three with no outs | Evansville 10, Tennessee 7

Shane Harris came in for the Aces on the mound following the second run of the inning.

Cannon Peebles put the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first with a one out walk.

Cal Stark struck out swinging for the second out, sending Christian Moore to the plate.

Christian Moore flew out to right to end the game, stranding the bases loaded.

The if-necessary game between the two teams is set for 6:00 on Sunday.

The 10 runs allowed by Tennessee pitching are the most the Vols have allowed under Tony Vitello in an NCAA Tournament game.
