NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Vanderbilt baseball team won its SEC Tournament opener against Florida while honoring a 10-year-old boy who died after being swept into a storm drain during severe weather nearly two weeks ago.

The Vandy Boys beat the Gators 6-3 on Tuesday night while wearing a sticker with Asher Sullivan’s initials surrounded by a golden heart on their batting helmets.

Director of Schools for Rutherford County Dr. Jimmy Sullivan thanked Vanderbilt for honoring his son.

“We needed a positive as we had just left a place that parents should never have to be to see their child. As soon as we got to the car, we saw this,” Sullivan said. “Words will never be enough.”

On Monday night, Sullivan announced Asher’s donated organs helped save four lives.

“Today was the hardest day so far…Today we said goodbye to Asher after his honor walk for organ donation,” Sullivan said on Monday. “We walked him through the fifth floor and to the elevators that go down to the OR. Asher gave the gift of organ donation to four others so he will live on in them.”

He added that he plans to live his life to honor Asher’s spirit and to make sure he is not forgotten.
