NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Many believe there is a religious explanation behind determining when Easter will be, but it actually has to do with meteorology.

It may sound strange, but Easter’s date is determined by the moon.

Easter Sunday always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring.

This year, the vernal equinox, or better known as the first day of spring, was March 19th. The first full moon after that was on March 25th. Therefore, Easter will be the Sunday after that date, which is March 31st this year.

Easter will be much later next year, falling on April 20, 2025. The earliest date Easter can fall on is March 22nd and the latest is April 25th.

The next time we’ll see Easter fall on a date in March will be in 2027.
