Pat Welter
Multimedia sports journalist
Professional experience:
I got my start as a video reporter for the Tampa Tribune’s website TBO.com. I’ve covered sports for TV at WJAC-TV in Johnstown, PA, abc27 in Harrisburg, PA and at Spectrum News 13 in Orlando, Fla.
News Philosophy:
I try to take people places they haven’t been with my sports coverage. I believe everyone has a story you just have to ask the right questions.
Education:
I attended Providence College and received a Masters in Broadcasting from Emerson College.
Birthplace/Hometown:
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, spent my high school years in Londonderry, NH
Hobbies, interests, community involvement:
I love movies and still dream of being a director. Favorites are The Shining and Groundhog Day. I played drums in a band in college and like to play the guitar to relax. I’m good for a pick up basketball game, but the knees don’t work the same as they used to.
Family and pets:
My wife and I met at Providence College. We have two young kids, Emma and Johnny. They love to stay up and watch “Daddy Ball” with me aka sports before they go to bed.
Likes best about NC:
Ummm the sports. It’s why I wanted to come here, to be a part of the best college sports town in the country. I’m also used to New Hampshire’s endless winter and Florida’s endless summer. It’s nice to be somewhere that gets the best of all the seasons.
Most memorable assignments:
Penn State’s Rose Bowl run during the 2016-17 season was filled with incredible moments ending with the best game I’ve ever witnessed live in Pasadena. I also spent three days with New Orleans Saints Defensive Back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson during the 2019 NFL Draft. I covered him and his family during his college days at Florida, and watching local guys make it is one of the best rewarding parts of this job.
