Man charged with DWI after chase ends in crash in Cumberland County

Michael Brian Maness, 43, of Parkton has been charged with driving while impaired. The sheriff's office said more charges are forthcoming.

A chase ended in a crash Tuesday in Cumberland County.

At 10:30 p.m. a Cumberland County deputy was near Grove Street and B Street attempting to find a stolen vehicle. When the deputy spotted the car and attempted to pull over the driver, the car kept going and led deputies on a pursuit.

Deputies chased the suspect into Sampson County, where the driver lost control of the car and crashed. The driver then fled on foot.

Deputies were able to locate and arrest Michael Brian Maness, 43, of Parkton. He was charged with driving while impaired. The sheriff's office said more charges are forthcoming.

Maness had two outstanding orders for arrest for the following crimes:

  • Felony probation violation
  • Larceny of motor vehicle
  • Possession of stolen motor vehicle (3 counts)
  • Resist public officer
  • Habitual larceny (2 counts)
  • Break and enter a motor vehicle
  • Obtaining property by false pretenses
  • Possession of stolen goods

He was processed at the Cumberland County Center and held on a denied bond. His first appearance is July 8 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
