STUART, Fla. — Two people are recovering in the hospital after their car was sideswiped by a speeding vehicle and sent tumbling over the Roosevelt Bridge.
Stuart police said early Friday morning, a Tesla was heading north on the bridge at 1:18 a.m. when it struck a Toyota 4Runner and sent it 50 feet over the edge. The SUV landed in an apartment complex parking lot.
According to a crash report, first responders found the driver of the Toyota still inside the vehicle, "semi conscious and not alert." They were taken by Trauma Hawk to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital.
A passenger in the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle onto the bridge before the vehicle plunged off the bridge. That passenger was also taken to Lawnwood by Trauma Hawk due to lacerations.
A witness told police that they saw the Tesla driving "approximately 100 mph" northbound over the bridge before side-swiping the Toyota.
Residents are amazed there were no fatalities.
"My wife said she did hear a crash," resident Jim Gamble said. "We didn't take a look outside to investigate, but we did see lights flashing."
Police arrested the driver of the Tesla, Adam Alaoui, 21, a short time later, finding the car in a nearby apartment complex with a missing tire.
The crash report said Alaoui had a "large bruise on his forehead" but denied being involved in the wreck. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic ER North for his injuries and faces a felony traffic charge.
A female passenger in the Tesla told police she continually told Alaoui to pull over, but he did not.
The two people in the Toyota were in good condition as of Monday.
