Purchase options and add-ons

The plan was simple: set fire to Rome, massacre the rich, loot their property, and take over the government. It was up to Cicero—a bookish orator—to save the republic. Caesar, Pompey, Crassus, Cato: they all have their parts to play, and the masterful pen of Gaston Boissier makes these outsized characters live once more.

Gaston Boissier, a member of the Académie française, was a brilliant historian who specialized in making ancient Rome live again for modern readers. This new translation brings one of his last and most entertaining works to English-speaking readers for the first time.

I knew nothing of the “Catiline Conspiracy” or Gaston Boissier before acquiring this wonderful book, a new translation of Bossier’s 1906 French edition. Not interested in history from the days of Cicero, you say? Well, consider this found on page 147, written in 1906 and referencing Catiline: “We have just seen in certain of his remarks an echo of the socialists of our time. Might we not say that these conflagrations and massacres resemble to a certain degree the ordinary techniques of our anarchists? These resemblances, which naturally come to mind, help us understand how the history of today explains the history of the past.” Thank you, Dr. Boli for making such history accessible.
