What are the benefits of sports bras?

The best sports bras support the skin and ligaments in the breast, preventing damage to the areas that can cause sagging. But it’s not just about comfort – the right purchase can also improve your performance by reducing the activity of the pectoral muscles by up to 55%. This means less fatigue and more energy.

Chloe Kelly was wearing her made-to-measure Nike sports bra when she scored the winning goal in the Euro 2022 final. And while we might not be able to match that level of success, even if we had the perfect sports bra, we wouldn't complain about shaving a few precious minutes off our PB.

According to Dr Douglas Powell, lead author of the aforementioned study into the benefits of the right sports bra, a lack of support ‘not only influences movement of the breasts but...compensations occur across the entire body.' With over 70% of women having experienced 'exercise-induced breast pain' as a result of running or working out, we're saying enough is enough.

How to choose the best sports bra

So what should you be looking for before you buy? Sports bras are definitely not as simple as one-style-fits-all – your needs will differ massively based on your chest size and what activity you're doing.

High-impact sports such as running or HIIT require a firm level of support, but for yoga, barre and other lower-impact activities, you can opt for something lighter. If you’re bigger busted, extra hold in the form of underwired cups, thicker straps to take pressure off your shoulders and adjustable fastenings for a tailored fit can be handy.

How we test

Our Women’s Health Lab experts conducted their biggest-ever sports bra test. They spent hours researching the best styles on the market before creating a final shortlist. They then asked a panel of fitness fanatics and activewear obsessives to put the sports bras through a range of workouts, from CrossFit to running, to see how they coped when things got sweaty. Each tester worked out at least three times in their bras, and each product was tested by seven different people.

They then provided feedback on how the bras felt during exercise, how easy they were to get on and off, how secure they felt and how good they looked – because, functionality aside, the clothes we work out in should make us feel good, too.

Back in the lab, wash tests were conducted to look for any shrinkage and discolouration. Each bra was given an overall score that considered design, fit, comfort and performance.

Over 100 hours later, and after analysing all the feedback and scores, our winners were decided. You can find them below stamped with the esteemed Women’s Health Lab Approved logo.

Our editors have also picked their favourite sports bras – marked with an Editor's Choice logo – so get scrolling to find your perfect piece of kit.

Give it your all in this sleek Adidas number, which is uber supportive thanks to its innovative design. Unlike most sports bras, which have a clasp at the back, our champ features swan hooks around the chest and adjustable shoulder straps at the front for the perfect fit. It takes a bit of getting used to, but according to our testers, it's worth it.

Not only does it keep your boobs locked down, but it’s also comfy to wear and the cool, quick-drying fabric means you can sweat without stress.

WH Lab verdict: Combining style with functionality, this nifty bra will keep you supported through everything from HIIT to spin. Just note that sizing runs small around the bust, so size up if unsure.

Domyos Domyos High-Support Fitness Bra

Domyos High-Support Fitness Bra

For under £25, this design from good ol’ Decathlon does a stellar job of supporting your boobs during low- to medium-impact activities. Our testers found it too bouncy for HIIT and running, but they praised its range of features, including the adjustable straps and front zip that make it easy to get on and off.

It's supremely comfortable for small boobs but those with bigger chests may find the fit a touch too restrictive.

WH Lab verdict: Though divisive with its zip design, this bra punches well above its price tag. It’s a strong choice for small-boobed babes on a budget.

Lululemon Align Bra

Lululemon Align Bra

This beaut from the OGs at Lululemon earned a resounding thumbs up from our panel, who lavished praise on the buttery soft material and chic design. ‘I literally did not want to take the bra off!’ said one happy tester.

Despite having just one strap, everyone was pleasantly surprised by how supportive it was during low impact activities – it stayed put during lively Vinyasa flows and didn’t need rearranging once! It was a cinch to slip in and out of and we found it could handle sweaty sessions, with no unpleasant sensations or sweat stains reported. What’s more, it washed well and dried extremely quickly.

The WH Lab verdict: Style and performance go hand in hand with this light support bra. It’s *the dream* for everything from yoga and Pilates to lounging around the house. Note, however, that it’s better suited to those with smaller breasts due to the lack of padding

We’re big fans of the Myprotein’s protein powder and sweet treats, but it turns out its activewear is equally impressive. The Tempo Ultra bra performed well under pressure, keeping everything in place during energetic HIIT classes and sprint sessions on the treadmill. A few keen panellists even declared it the most supportive sports bra they’ve ever tried. High praise, indeed.

Boasting Polygeine StayFresh odour control technology, it’s designed to stay fresh for longer and keep the skin sweat-free. The high neckline provides plenty of coverage – just what burpees call for. Additionally, the thick fabric feels much more expensive than it is.

On Running Performance Bra

UK Lab(HBZ,WH,MH)
On Running Performance Bra

If you’re on the sweaty side (no judgement), this breathable bra from leading running brand ON deserves a spot in your activewear collection. Our panel raved about the quick-drying fabric, which wicked away moisture in an instant. ‘I didn’t feel clammy or uncomfortable, even after my sweatiest workouts,’ said one satisfied tester.

This bra’s seamless design successfully prevented rubbing and chafing, and the smooth, stretchy material meant it was easy to peel off post-workout. Support-wise, testers said it did the job nicely in the gym and on the road thanks to the wide straps and snug fit around the bust.

What’s more, it has a high neckline and built-in breast pads so you can confidently wear it on its own while protecting your modesty.

WH Lab verdict: A few testers would have preferred adjustable straps for a more tailored fit, but that comes down to personal preference. If you like to work up a sweat, this good-looking number (which comes in some very cute colourways) is a sound choice.

Vuori Vuori AllTheFeels™ Bra

UK Lab(HBZ,WH,MH)
Vuori AllTheFeels™ Bra

Many light support sports bras aren’t suitable for those with larger breasts (IYKYK), but this gorj number from trendy SoCal brand Vuori bucks that trend. Testers with big and small boobs alike found it sufficiently supportive for low-impact workouts, including yoga, Pilates and barre. It didn’t budge when they raised their arms overhead, or feel sticky after numerous rounds of pulsing on the reformer machine.

Comfort-wise, it scored extremely highly thanks to the plush fabric, which was the perfect balance between stretchy and supportive. Everyone loved the flattering scoop neck style, with many saying they’d happily wear the bra all day long.

WH Lab verdict: It’s hard to find fault with Vuori’s signature AllTheFeels bra. If yoga and Pilates are your jam, it offers the ultimate combo of comfort, support and style.

BEST FOR A CUSTOMISED FIT

Under Armour Women's HeatGear® Armour High Sports Bra

Women's HeatGear® Armour High Sports Bra

This high support style from the fitness pros at Under Armour stands out for its unique front-adjusting straps. There’s no need to faff around trying to reach around your back; you simply slide and secure them with a hook that’s easy to reach on the move – just what you want when you’re running or in the middle of a fast-paced HIIT sesh.

Adjustments aside, does the bra live up to its high support claims? That’s a big fat ‘yes’, according to our testing panel. They rated the compression level, which held everything in but still felt comfortable. The sweat-wicking HeatGear fabric and mesh panels kept everyone cool, it didn’t cling to their skin, and was extremely quick to dry.

WH Lab verdict: This versatile bra will give you all the extra support you need during high-impact workouts. It was a little tricky to get off post-sesh, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker.

Energy Empower U/W Lightly Padded Convertible Sports Bra

There’s nothing worse than an underwire that constantly pokes and scratches as you try to work out. Fortunately, there’s no such problem when wearing this bad boy – it's as comfy as underwired sports bras come.

Our testers praised the wide straps, hook-eye closure and racerback style for ample support, and they liked the light padding and form-fitting material, which felt soft against the skin. Best of all, no rubbing, digging in or chafing was reported.

Expert verdict: If you’ve got a small chest, this bra will provide all the support you need during your most energetic workouts. For those blessed with bigger boobs, however, it’s best for low- and medium-impact activities such as Pilates, cycling and circuits.

Sweaty Betty Ultra Running Bra

Sweaty Betty Ultra Running Bra

Get your sweat on in style with this high-tech number. It’s made with quick-dry fabric and features mesh panels at the front and back to aid ventilation and airflow. Sure enough, it kept our panellists cool and dry as they put in the work, with none of that unpleasant sticky, sweat-soaked sensation. Phew!

Other plus points include cleverly designed cups to offer comfortable compression, adjustable straps for tailored support, and a high neckline that prevents the girls from spilling out mid-squat jump. The hook-eye fastening means it’s a doddle to get on and off, too.

WH Lab verdict: Okay, so it’s more technical than pretty, but if you’re after excellent sweat-wicking and support, you can’t go far wrong. Testers suggested sizing up as the band is a little tight.

M&S Goodmove Extra High Impact Serious Sports Bra

For top quality on a budget, look to this wired M&S design, which performed well when put through its paces on the road and during HIIT workouts. Our panel said it offered excellent bounce control and top-notch sweat wicking, while proving easy to pop on and off, thanks to the quadruple hook-eye fastening.

Despite the secure fit (trust us, your boobs won’t budge), testers found it comfy enough to wear all workout long. ‘It’s my new favourite sports bra,’ declared one enthusiastic tester – it doesn’t get much better than that!

WH Lab verdict: Popping to the shops? This versatile, budget-friendly bra is worth adding to your basket. The sizing was hit and miss, though, so we’d recommend trying before you buy. When the fit is right, it’s an absolute winner.
